subwoofer

In most cases, when I install rockfords, I tend to put them in a ported box. IMO, and many people that I did the installs for, the Rockford just tend to like a ported box better. Although they can be made to sound great in a sealed as well, it is often just easier to use a ported enclosure.

I have had Kicker, JL, and RF. I currently have two RF 12s, this has been my least favorite sub so far. My favorite has been Kicker. In fact, I am contemplating switching back to the Kicker s12d. I have one now and can't decide if I want two 12s as I have now, or just one. Anyway, RF isn't all of that bad, there are worse subs out there.

ok well i got the sub the q-logic box, an 8 gauge wiring kit, and a four year warranty for 153.00. Man the joys of working at bestbuy.Anyways the box is sealed is it possible to make the box ported or should i just leave it as it is. Thanks

Try it both ways to see what you will like best. But I think you'll settle on the ported.

how would i go about doing that, just get a hole saw, cut it out and get a port to fit to size, and seal it up. Ive also heard of people using PVC pipe, how long should it be cut. Thanks again for the help.

There should be dimensions included in the paperwork that comes with your new sub.

I personally don't like PVC, as it has it's own resonance properties. I prefer to use cardboard tube. Prefabbed ports work well. Chances are you'll need to cut it to length.

Depending on the size of the hole, you may use a hole saw or a jig saw.

There are specific calculations required to do a ported box right. They depend on the measurements (internal dimensions) of the box and the depth of motion and size of your speaker. You need to ensure that the soundwaves that travel through the port are in phase with those produced from the front of the speaker/woofer. They will sound reasonably well at pretty much any phase as long as it is not exactly out of phase, because then the soundwaves will cancel each other. However, if you tune the port to produce waves that are exactly in phase, it will greatly enhance the sound quality. This goes for any brand of speaker. I don't have any weblinks that show how to tune a ported box, only books. Although I imagine there are plenty of data on the web that show you how. PM me if you have specific questions and I will look them up for you in my books.

I have 2 10's(fosgates) and I like em. It's all about cost. You get what you pay for. My 2 10's don't sound worth crap compared to my buds 1 10 JL, but his was also almost triple the cost.

aside from doing the calculations to get the "perfect" box, you could look up some published reccommended enclosures for your speaker. they're out there for most speakers. They should give you the rec. volume of the enclosure, the length, and diameter of the port for a given resonant freq. If the box you got is roughly the same volume, all you have to do is cut the port hole and install a tube of the correct dimensions. I'd try it out the way it is at first, if its not loud enough, or you think its not "right", try the port. you can always try it and seal it back up if you dont like it.

Cheers.

BTW, i just love when i see people being sold a subwoofer driver and ANY random "cool" looking box to put it in. The box is critical to proper sound and can often make cheap speakers sound better than expensive ones in the wrong enclosures.

This is what I have "in my XJ":

10" Soundstream Edge. So far, so good. I wanted a box built that I know I do not have the skills to make. Therefore, I purchased the sub from a shop and had them build me a box (kinda). Otherwise, these subs are cheap for a new sub on Ebay. The sub is hooked up to an old Soundstream D200 II. I will be replacing that amp shortly.
