Strokers and the AW4

If you have read my other thread, i am long term planning on buying a stroker. How ever i was wondering how well my aw4 would hold up to more power?
My current trans has 120k on the clock, doesn't seem to have any problems, shifts fine. (its a 2000 by the way)

I considered posting this in my other stroker thread, but since i couldn't find much useful information via search, i thought it deserved its own thread.

Thanks in advance.

There isn't a problem. I have 60k+ on mine. They are put in cars with much more hp.

IIRC the difference between an A340 and an AW4 is the beefier valve body in the A340. Other than that - same box of gears.

All depends on how the tranny has been treated to this point and how you plan on treating it once you get the stroker in there. My buddy built a 4.7 with a ported HO head oversized valves higher compression, Crane cams, header etc on his '88 AW4 with 120k miles and it was fine for 20-30k miles. By the end he was having shifting problems but it isn't clear if that was due to the motor or just a bad circuit somewhere. He was leaning to the circuit since it was fairly intermittent.

They should be fine with a stroker as long as you don't do too many burnouts or drag starts. You can fry an AW4 with a stock motor if you try hard enough :)

Uhhh I cant make any promises about burnouts or drag starts once i get a stroker!!

Burnouts and drag starts work for me. I rebuilt mine but the AW4 can easily handle it I beat on it all day. You lose some power because they are made soft and comfy.

I been flogging on my stroker for a while with no problems. 33's aw4, D35(yea, It started out as a run it till I break it but it will not die, It does not even make bad noises yet)

I did a bunch of hard launches, heavy towing, ect, with no problems yet.

I am in the same boat as you on this one. I am looking at either buying a stroker or building my own. As for the AW4, I hear they hold up to the Stroker. I have read several things and hear even more. I guess it depends on how you treat it as mentioned above and how it was treated before you. If does go and you pull it apart and find it in pieces, then you can contact Level 10 Performance to rebuild it. They are a little pricey, but they can build a very strong AW4. Somewhere in the 450 HP range. Anything more, then I would recommend a 700R4 or T350. Not the T400. Even though it is a stronger transmission, it has some parasitic power loss associated with it.

Think TCI.

Good luck.

I raced one behind a 401 for a while. It did eventually start slipping but I got the trans used for $50 and installed it without even pulling the pan and changing the filter. Could have already had 200K miles on it for all I know.

Here it is towards the end: http://videos.streetfire.net/video/1261-113-at-Julesburg-CO_31796.htm - somewhere around 360 rwhp at the time vs stroker's 200.

I'm sure one in good condition wouldn't even know there was a stroker in front of it.

What all did that that mj have done to it?

And you think the stoker only puts 200 to the rear wheels? I thought a decent 4.7 would put about 280 @fw. Well i guess assuming 25% loss with the aw4 you are pretty close...

you would be doing outstanding to get 280 at the crank. If you throw countless dollars and build the perfect stroker you can break that mark.

200 at the rear wheels is quite a bit actually, when you consider that the stocker was probably making less than 80hp back there.

I have seen alot of strokers advertised at 275+

Such as the atk stroker

Maybe what i need is a 401 like in the video... :repair:
