Steering upgrades??? What to do

So i currently have stock steering except for a terraflex trackbar and a 4.5 in lift. Im going to step up to 4in lifted coils and 2in pucks and a long arm kit and im wondering what needs to be upgraded in the steering? And maybe what kits to buy?

Only downside is that the TRE's are specific to this product so you can't just run down to Checker and get a replacement if you break one of them.

I put this one on my little brother's MJ. Its more expensive, but you can replace the TRE's at any local parts store. Only thing I didn't like about it was you have to remove the steering rod (pitman arm to tierod) to make your TOE adjustments.

Also known as the drag link. Im taking your comment as meaning that the TREs are only right hand thread?


Im sorry, but with the reputation that Rustys has, I use any steering kit that he made on my Jeep.






As for steering kits, look into the Currie setup, or the JCR one ton kit. Both are a lot stonger then stock, but like most kits, they do have some downsides.

No, the TRE are not all RH Thread. The draglink connects into the tierod just before the passenger side TRE, as such you have to remove it to adjust the toe.

As for the Rusty's reputation, that is pretty much only on this site from I've found. Unless you have personal experience relating to their so-called inferior products you might want to STFU. I have used and continue to use their products and have had almost no complaints. What people need to realise is Rusty's sells their stuff for generally a lot cheaper than anybody and you get what you pay for. My steering box brace was a bit of a pain to fit, but part of that was also due to my Detours bumper. On that note, my RE (so-called GODS of offroad products) HD Trac-Bar brace was even more of a pain to fit, and they designed it in such a way you can't get a socket on most of the bolts. I actually thought to myself, "I should have saved myself some quid and bought the Rusty's one."

You're right with the Rustys bashing mainly on this site. Maybe its because NAXJA seems to be geared more towards the "hardcore" crowd compared to Jeep Forum, or Jeeps Unlimited. Is that the reason? I have no idea.


I have bought a couple things from Rustys. One being his K&N and exhaust package about 5 years ago. The other being front shock adapters.

Both have worked fine, and are all still on my Jeep. With that being said, the exhaust hangers were not in the right place. Dont know if I am the only one, as I have not seen any other person mention it.


I have also had a friend run his trackbar and trackbar bracket on his MJ a couple years ago. With less then 30 miles on both, the bracket broke in a movie theater parking garage. That was with no wheeling and all street miles. It was replaced with a TnT unit.

I have also seen multiple people have problems with his trackbars.



I am glad you have had good results with Rustys, but I just dont trust anything that he makes himself. The shock mounts? Ill run them because if they fail, Im out a shock. If a trackbar breaks..... Im sure you have seen the pictures of the flopped TJ that was caused by a Rustys trackbar failing.
 
Ya i agree NO RUSTYS. my experiences show that Rusty has no support for his piece of shyt products.

I originally had a rustys track bar....bad idea

The thing came with the wrong size bushing, which rusty charged us to replace. Then i had the track bar on for 3 week, hadnt even had a chance to 4 wheel. and the thing broke just at the stupid tie rod end.

Rustys products are made for those who wana lift the jeep to shit and drive to work. They are pure mall crawler products.

Too bad Phat Jeep's website went offline like a year ago, I do not think they are around anymore. .......(Last time through rollinsville I did not see any signs at were their shop was)........although there was an interesting thread about them on the Colorado4x4 board that was good. :laugh3:

This simple thread got way onto Rusty's bashing again and I hate making points, but so many bash Rusty's and fail to mention all the other manufactures that have had problems as well.

I have Rusty's track bar no probs, They do not manufacture the tie rod end. Also bought front LCA's, steering box brace, skid plate, leaf springs, air intake, ......no problems! Customer service; bought JKS disco's opened the box missing a part from JKS, Rusty's overnighted me the missing part for free. Fast shipping; ordered on a Saturday through the web, recieved friday doing ground shipping. For every 99 satisfied customers, the 1 that had the bad experience is the one that gets told over and over.

BTW; the Rugged Ridge steering I would have to say two thumbs, I hate when you use Rod Ends in steering, bad mojo. Wear out too fast, noisy, and rod ends when they fail, fail big time!

Ran that for years in my CJ and hated ever doing it but could not go back cause I had to reem out my knuckled. My .02 on that one.............:D

Yep, a lot of companies have come and gone since then. 90% of the dead links were just websites being reshuffled though. But I did make that thread like three and half years ago. Back in the day when I actually felt like taking what was in my head and putting it on paper.................:laugh3:

and to think it wasnt agry and super condiscending (sp?)...im almost shocked lol....i jk i jk

but ON topic...i think if you push things hard enough...EVERYTHING will break....hence the evolution of products and ideas....every experience is different...try something....see what happens....and let us know how it goes....

youll always get positive feedback and naysayers....(i would know...i ask more questions than anyone!)
