Storm coming? I could have told you that without looking - I've hurt like all Hell for the last week!
Allowing yourself extra follow distance when driving is laudable and excellent advice. It's just too bad that veridam few people out here understand why you're doing it - they usually take it as an invitation... Change wiper blades every six months, and a coat or two of a quality wax on the windscreen won't go awry (tends to work better than Rain-X - I've tried both.) Make sure all your lamps work as well - visibility is important!
Things to bear in mind in foul weather:
1) Typically, putting on your full beams doesn't help. It merely annoys other drivers, and you end up "flaring" yourself if the weather gets too bad. And, it doesn't help visibility either way.
2) For the love of Gawd - slow down! Also, know your limitations. If it gets too bad, no-one will think less of you if you pull over and stop (in fact, people are likely to think more of you - at least, the people who matter. Having driven cross-country, I've been woke up by highway patrolmen to explain to them that I was "sleeping off the weather." Rather than being read off for it, I was uniformly complimented on exercising good judgment (probably because I was wearing California plates, and they just don't expect that sort of thing from California drivers.)
3) Assume that everyone else is an incompetent jackass. While this won't be true in some limited cases, I find it a valid and useful assumption (one of the few,) and it's saved my arse more than a few times.
4) Don't let your tank get below 1/4-full, if possible. That quarter-tank can come in very handy!
