Starter differences

Obviously it's not definitive, but a lot of places list them as PMGR starters. The Jeep part numbers are 5604 1014 for the (97?)-98, and 5604 1012 for the 99+ if someone wants to run down part numbers and cross reference them. I never bothered digging any deeper, as mine was just in need of a good cleaning and fresh grease.

I could be wrong, but I don't think a GR or PMGR starter motor was used on the 6-242.
I could be wrong (often am, obviously), but I was under the impression that all the 4.0 starters were gear reduction. The ones I've had out and looked at were, as far as I recall. If the weather relents I'll look around and see if I have anything left in the barn.

Mine are all 87-89 Renix, and I pretty sure they are all GR. My last two just needed a new solenoid.

Happens that I'm wrong every now and again - I don't let it bother me. I was going from memory.

Anyhow, let's break out the catalogue and see what it has to say...

#17006 - 1987-2001 XJ 6-242
#17006 - 1987-1992 MJ 6-242
#17006 - 1993-1998 ZJ 6-242
#17449 - 1999-2002 WJ 6-242
#17879 - 2003-2004 WJ 6-242
#17006 - 1991-1998 YJ/TJ 6-242
#17449 - 1999-2002 TJ 6-242
#17879 - 2003-2004 TJ 6-242 (M/T)
#17874 - 2003-2004 TJ 6-242 (A/T)

#17006 - Mitsubishi 1.7kW PMGR. Three styles in use, all swap freely.
#17449 - No Data (!)
#17874 - Mitsubishi 1.4kW PMGR. Spade terminal, small mounting face
#17879 - Mitsubishi 1.2kW PMGR. Resembles #17449 w/spade terminal

Those is the details I have. Conclusions:
- GR starters have changed, I used to be able to spot them out of hand. Oops!
- PM motors probably used to make them compact (the Japanese were good at this!)
- Not all 6-242 starter motors swap freely. I need to get units in hand to make comparisons. (At least there are only four I need to worry about!)
- I need to get a new catalogue - this one's dated 2005...

The catalogue I'm using is usually pretty good about giving interchange notes, the fact that nothing seems to cross over is mildly surprising to me. Methinks this warrants further investigation (I've been asked more about alternators of late...)
