squeaking while turning?

hey guys i have a couple problems wrong with my jeep that I REALLY need to fix. First off I have a squeaking noise whenever I turn the steering wheel... any ideas to how to fix it?

Get underneath and look at the front wheels near the calipers. If there is red staining going on your u-joints are probobly on their way out. I'm getting ready to replace mine . . .

I'm actually having a similar problem. When I turn the wheels to the left or right while moving, there is a squeak that seems to be variable with the speed I am moving. It sounds like it is coming from the front axle.

Let me see if I can describe the squeak a bit better. You know how when you have a rock or tack or something in your tire? Obviously, as you move, it only hits once per revolution but the sound speeds up with your speed. My sound does the same thing only it's a squeak. It kind of goes Reeee-Reee-Ree-Re-rere-rerere-rererere.

It doesn't seem to do it at higher speeds but I don't turn the wheel far enough to be sure on that one.

I'm thinking perhaps the u-joints but have never replaced them so I don't know how to tell if they're bad. Any suggestions? My power steering fluid is full.

It's a 2000 cherokee w/o any lift. :-( No money yet and since a German nanny wrecked my last one, I'll have to wait.

Did you ever fix this problem? I'm having the same exact problem with the same year XJ. It sounds kind of like the squeak you get from wiping dry glass. I'm gonna check underneath and see if the u-joints are leaking.

It's the axle shaft u-joints, I had the same EXACT problem on my jeep, same squeek.

There are some very good detailed write ups out there, it's not that hard to replace, the only trouble you will run into is if the hub bearing assembly is rusted to the axle, that's what took me the longest, and pouding out the u-joints.

If you know you're going to replace them, start about 5-6 days ahead and start squirting the hub assembly down with PB blaster, don't let it hit your brake discs though.

I did a temp solution of spraying some WD-40 on the joints and it went away.

A seldom seen solution to this.....Same problem on my 89 XJ, it turned out that the anti-rattle clip on the inside pad (right side) was broken. The squeak was caused by the pad on the rotor
