split second engine cut out.

what would cause the engine on an 87 XJ to seemingly ramndomly cut out for a split second?

Like it will be motoring along, and i think it mostly does it under light acceleration, but i can not make it do it on command to verify, and suddenly the motor will just shut off for the slightest ammount of time, like the snap of a finger and then fire right back up and go like nothing was ever wrong.

I have heard that my CPS may be at fault for this, but are there any other likely culprits behind this annoying problem?

My '94 did the same thing....replaced the CPS, and hasn't done it since.

For sure CPS is suspect.
Don't "ohm" it, or test it.
Order an OEM from Mopar, and replace it.
Could be many other things, but this is the first to try.

Ah, yes Onk, you are the one who told me to check the CPS in the first place. I was just fishing for other possibles. since you have experience with that little POS think you could help me out sometime in the next few weeks?

I PMed you my number.. let me know when you get the part. I got Kargen to price match mine. I think Teamcherokee.com was a desent deal. Just print it out and take it into them. Doesn't take long at all to install. I even work in your town so I could come by after work sometime.

I had same issue which turned out to be an ignition coil going out.
