I have a 98 cherokee limited and the rear speakers are in the roof. does any one now how to get to them and what size they are and what would you recomend replacing the factory speakers with. I like a little bass but dont plan on using an amp, I do have a new jvc 200 whatt head unit already installed .

Most XJ speakers are 5.25" rounds - but you can be sure by checking www.crutchfield.com - they've got an application guide.

Considering the abuse you're likely to put them do (bouncing around and such...) get something with a poly cone - a paper cone isn't worth the trouble to install, and a metalised cone is too much. I've use Sony Xplod, JVC Poly-Cones, and a set of RF/Polks all with good results.

Since you're saying you've got a 200W head unit, I'm going to assume that 50Wx4 channels? If it is, save yourself a headache and get speakers that can handle 120-130W per pair (60-65W each) - since that will prevent you overdriving your speakers and getting that nasty "beer can" sound - and the voice coils will last longer. Also, it gives you room to upgrade later...

5-90

they use a torx screw and have a factory harness which connects to the speaker...either replace wire (a pain but not too bad) or splice into factory wire and use 5 1/4 direct fir - or i squeezed 6.5 no problem so yeah i got a great amount of better sound from my panasonic headunit amp (mosfet 50x4) with some alpine 6.5's. not very much bass granted but sweet mids and highs...the 6.5 is a 2 range speaker capable of up to 120 max when i step up to my 4 channel amp... so yeah 5 1/4 or 6.5

Yes, that is correct. Like aparke4 said.. just pop the grill's off.
Be carefull... I broke one of the tabs when I popped mine off.

I popped the grills off of mine the other day, It was easy. I decided to replace the front ones first cause I hear those more anyway. I fit 6 1/2's in the front, but I did have to redrill a couple pilot holes, no big deal. I went with Polk DB-650's. They are a really nice, reasonably priced all around speaker. They have a good full sound: good treble, but not tinny; full mids; and solid bass, but not enough to rattle your skull. I think they would probably sound even better through an aftermarket head unit. If you're not sure what speakers you like - go to Circuit City or Best Buy and listen to them on the sample stereos they have set up. They buy the speakers off of ebay or someplace else affordable.

did you guys have any problem with them being too deep in the doors to cause problems?

Yes, with the 97+ doors, you have to watch the mounting depth of the speakers. When I put my Alpine 5.25 speakers in my swapped in 97 doors, the windows would not go all the way down because they hit the speakers, which are really deep.

I put in some Kenwood 6.5 speakers with a shallow (about 1 11/16") mounting depth. Just had to drill some new holes.

can I install 6.5 " speakers in the roof easy enough without major work? I did install some 5.25" pioneers in the doors today and nothing fit I had to drill new holes then there was a small gap around the speaker. the factory speakers looked bigger than the pioneers but they measured 5.5 across the speaker.

I swear I had to pull the headliner on my 2000...

The soundbar back there is, IIRC, 5.25" speakers, and is best for "rear fill". Best-bet is to do something else back there. I keep considering some sort of a "box" with 6x9's and maybe a sub in it. I'd wire things up to make it removable, so I can pull if out if I need to haul stuff.

The front doors handle a 6.5" I think, which gets you a MUCH better speaker. But depth is definitely an issue. Crutchfield pointed me in the right direction for a good fit. I think mine are Pioneers.

The rears (even with decent-quality replacements) sound like a transistor radio compared with the fronts.

any idea where to find the wires and what color they would be if I could hook up a box or some kind of other speaker on the floor? what do you think about a bazooka tube or maybe there is some other type of speaker that has a bulit in amp. I may not need an amp my head unit puts out 4x50 whatts

I used to commute two hours to work and replaced all the stock speakers and head unit in my 92 XJ. didnt have any problems at all fitting 5.5's into the doors or into the rear gate. I also added a 10" sub (amp under the rear seat) in a custom enclosure across from the spare tire. Fits in nice and snug and I got some matching xj carpet from a junkyard to cover it. Nobody (that doesnt know XJ's) has ever noticed. The cars been broken into twice... but they never even looked at the sub.

The problem is people in the back seat complain its too bass-y. Anybody know where i can get one of these roof bars aftermarket?

ahh my specilty i love music i have a set of alpine type s in my front and the stock pos in the back (not enogh money)
the type s's are nice they have a metal cone and if you want bass they deliver. i have had people ask if i had a sub in there.

the grills pop off. what i have been told in my 95 xj it is all 5.25" speakers.
but i warn you if you play bass get some dynamat it will pay off in the end.

if you go to best buy and listen to the alpines and stand in the middle you will be engolfed in sound. the same is true in the car. it feels like you are at a concert.
they do not stick out any further than stock if i am correct.
