Speaker size?

I am looking to replace the pseakers in my xj and i want to use the holes already in it for the speaker housing....doe sanyone know what size the stock XJ speakers are in an 89. Also does anyone know where they measure from on a speaker...is it the speakercone itself or is it the whole unit?

The stock speakers are 5.25" all around and I'm pretty sure its the size of the voice coil

On a speaker, the cone is measured, and the mount points are usually standardised (but NOT always. I've run into a few...)

The stock speakers on the 89 are 5.25" round all the way around - in the doors and the liftgate. As long as you don't pick anything exotic, you should not have any trouble with mount depth.

As far as improvement goes, it is possible to fit up to a standard (say, 3.5-4" deep) 6x9 in the liftgate. Make your cuts with a Dremel and a "spiral cutting bit" (like for a Rotozip.) Lay out with the speaker template. I've done this four times so far, and using Sony Xplods (two pair,) JVC 6x9's, and Fosgate 6x9's. You end up getting a little close to the outer panel with the magnet, but it fits with no distortion - and no interference, with a little care.
