Sort of of topic...lift kit onto Commando

HI guys I stumbled across a pretty nice Commando. The drivetrain is all gone, but would not have used it.

I am pretty sold on buying it as a project for my Son and I.

Here is what I am thinking currently.

I have a severly rusted 80,000 mile 88 xj that I can use as a donar, it has a 4.0, d242, auto, non disonnect d30, and a d35 in back.

I was brain storming on a way to get a nice ride and handling (my experience with leave lifts all the way around is not good), and as such was measuring the frame on the xj and the commando.

The widths are close enough that the links will take up the difference in width.

So I was thinking of using a kit like superlifts rock ready 6 inch kit to get the nice coil spring ride and all the pre enginering.

I suppose a rusty long arm kit would work well too with the sub frame it contains.

There would be some fab work I would have to do, but it would actually be a pretty easy swap.

So we are thinking regasket the engine and clean and paint it up, header and nice exhaust (not loud!), swapping the drivetrain over with new bearing and gears, rebuild the 242, swap in the tank and wire harness, put new seals in the xmsn, adding a 6 inch lift and some 33 inch A.T's.

I found a set of floor pans, and the rest of the rust is easy fix as the body mounts are not rusty.

Should make a nice, cool, and reliable ride for the boy to drive to school, and start his life with.

We were honestly looking at a Wagon, but we saw the grille of this Commando poking out of a lean too on the barn.

Purchase price? Oh heack you can have it if you get it out of here, and clean the lean to (scrap metal).

Needless to say it is coming home this spring!

Let me heat you thoughts and ideas on this.

Remember...DAILY DRIVER!

What year? If it is a C101 I don't think you'll get the 4.0 between the firewall and the grille without switching to a "long" CJ front clip. AMC made the bull nose Commando for a reason. I saw a C101 with a YJ grille once - looked pretty good - the square lines went together well.

If it's a bull nose post pics when it is done.

Sweet, I passed on one a few years ago, drove off, turned around and went back within 5 min, it was gone....perfect tailgate and hard top, had been garage kept it's entire life, even the factory paint was good. :kickmyself:
I still look as I travel around. Did get my eye on a MJ Eliminator parked in a barn, dark blue 4x4, 4 flats and covered in dust. Need to make an effort and stop by, see what they are doing with it...
Besides, a comando with a 4 or 6 inch lift, if done right, handles just fine on the road..
