i just traded of my good ol' 1977 cj-7 for my new ride, a 92' cherokee 4.0. This is due to the extreme respect these things have earned from me watching my friends thrash them like theres no tommorrow. anyway, i still have the great itch for my roofless habits, left over from the CJ days, and today it hit me... why not just take a sawzall to the roof of this bad boy and have the best of both worlds. What i want to do is cut from the rear of the front doors back, and along the windows to have a sort of comanchee look to it, then i'll just cut the back in half and weld some hinges to it and have a fold down tailgate. Has anybody heard of this being done before? any suggestions on how to go about it or not what to do? any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,
Adam

well... it's been done, it's possible, but you need to build a cage of sorts in order to reinforce everything. The thing is XJ's are unibody so the top is part of a structure and once you cut it you need to provide reinforcements.

i have been thinkin the same thing... the cage would need to be at least a 6 pt but 8 pt might even be stronger than the roof. recommend a pro install it for you though... need to pay attention to mounting points and the like... or just slap in a roll bar out of a old 4runner and wheel the piss out of it until you fold it in half.... if you do it post some pics....
