Small performance gains...

I don't think MAP adjusters will do anything on stockers since the ECU will pickup on lean/rich and adjust for it once the O2 goes closed loop. If you want to do it anyway ou can also correct for some of this by relocating the MAT further into the cold air flow if you want, since that will make the computer misread air density and run richer, at least until it enters closed loop

K&N style cone filter............louder intake, sucked in water when it was splashed into engine bay, Snorkle installed using a buick OEM cannister filter.
What model/yr Buick did you get this from? A canister style filter with cowl snorkel is in my future plans and a Buick filter sounds a lot more cost effective than the Land Rover filter Kejtar is running...:D

Not necessarily, the KN cone filter that I run for example. It has around 2.5x the surface area of the stock filter in the air box. Yet it filters only slightly less. You are saying that filter size and the air purification of filters are inversely proportional when they are not. Simple fluid mechanics...

By design, the stock air box will keep your filter a lot cleaner and significantly reduce your risk of water splash, but a cone style filter could be used in the same way. I just dont know of anyone with a cone filter in an airbox in an XJ.
If both filters are of the same size (like the drop in replacement I am running from K&N) the stock filter will filter better but be more restrictive. The way the K&N flows better is through larger holes. WHen dealing with a cone style, that's entirely different. The stock panel filter will still filter better as the cone style K&N uses the same filter media as the panel style K&N, but the cone will flow much better, better even than the K&N panel style replacement due to its larger size.

Cold air intake & cone filter: Definite improvement in throttle response, slight power gain, make sure filter breathes ambient temp. air by shielding it from engine compartment. The best ones are home-made with el cheapo parts from Home Depot so don't spend $250+ on an aftermarket intake.

What to you suggest for elbows, especially to the throttle body? I can get 3" (3.363 id, about 3.52 od) fiberglass pipe for free and figure it would be perfect for an intake, but need to find connectors. Any tips?

Cat-back: A good quality 2.5" catback exhaust should yield an easy 6hp gain and is one of the easiest mods you can do. Straight-through stainless steel mufflers like the Magnaflow will produce the best power and last forever. Something to consider if you live in a wet climate and expose your Jeep to salty winter roads.

Mechanical fan delete: Slight power gain, slight mpg gain, and faster engine response. Just make sure the electric fan that you use to replace it is properly shrouded and can pull enough air to prevent the engine from overheating at idle. Best if you wire it up to work in tandem with the factory auxiliary fan.

Agree on both. For exhaust don't just look at "kits," check out small exhaust shops and see what they can bend up for you. I had my exhaust replaced and the shop didn't charge any more to upsize it. Don't remember exactly what it costed, but it was very reasonable and it needed to be replaced anyway.

I've taken my mechanical fan off. It's much quieter and quicker, especially when taking off at part throttle. I'll try to install an electric fan before summer, but I've never had a problem overheating while street driving, but I want a fan before going off road.

Yeah I know I need to regear but I don't know anywhere that does it. I was told the dealer doesn't do it. Frankly I'd like to regear so my speedo isn't off.

Get on NC4x4 and look in the sponsors section. There is a shop or two in charlotte that should be able to set you up with gears in that area, but I forget the names.

I used a 3" diameter silicone 90 degree elbow that I cut to size to connect my airtube to the throttle body, and used hose clamps to secure it at each end. Take a look at this site:

Here is the list of stuff I have done and the results noticed.
Jacobs pro street ignition....devoured spark plugs, returned to stock.
Throttle body spacer..........no benefit noted, no harm noted.
Bosch platinum +4 plugs......Cold start and idle problems, returned to stock.
K&N style cone filter............louder intake, sucked in water when it was splashed into engine bay, Snorkle installed using a buick OEM cannister filter.
Mechanical fan delete...........faster throttle response.
Jet stage II chip...................more power at WOT
Banks Header.......................better sounding exhaust
3" exahust header back..........better sounding exhaust, slightly improved mileage, probably causing mild hearing loss.
Ford injectors.......................no change noticed
Accel 8.8mm plug wires...........haven't had to buy another set of wires in 5 years.
Port matched head................slightly better throttle response, power on top end.
99+ intake manifold.................no change noticed

good lord man... haha.

didnt do any Bored TB yet? I'm getting ready to install one.:viking: we'll see what happens.

Yeah, I forgot to list it. I pulled the TB off at work one day and put it on the lathe. Bored it to one diameter the entire way through. I didn't notice jack for performance gains though.

I love the thread new into xj"s old jeeper 88 4.o trying to reset timming alldata and michell say comp. cont. that advancing dist. only affects inj. timming 3.55s 33s 8mpg around town, cracked exh.I have to fix this is probably affecting o2 reading but 8mpg I'm light on the throttle to.I have 4.11s to go in the next couple weeks 'm only getting 120 mi. to a tank no black exh. seems to run good to

Please use punctuation other than periods for abbreviations. It took several times reading the above just to figure out that you weren't just a spam bot and another several to figure out exactly what you were trying to convey. No offense meant, but it reads like a schizophrenic talking to himself on a park bench.

What we have here is a failure to communicate.

I have one of those

Flows better
and no blow by oil on your filter.

On an engine with 100k miles, the first thing I would do is run a can of BG44K through the fuel to clean the carbon and injectors. Don't even bother with the cheap cleaners they don't stack up. BG44K will run you around $20 a can. I run a can every 10K miles in all my vehicles.

For the bucks, this is probably your best bet.
