Ok I know I've read this before on this site, but I can't find it. I was trying to locate a "popping" sound coming from somewhere in the front end (the axle u-joints have been replaced recently, maybe front drive shaft u-joint) on my '91 4x4 5-spd . The noise goes away in 4Hi, why does this seem expensive? However, I tried to get it into 4Lo but either forwards or backwards nothing happens. The truck doesn't go anywhere. I can hear the transfer case whinning but the truck is in Neutral even tho its in gear either 1st or reverse. Also when I shift out of 4Hi the only way I can get the thing out of 4x is to put it in reverse.
Now this is my first Jeep and the only other 4x4's I've had are a '92 GMC 3/4 ton and a '81 Subaru I'm not exactly sure what to look for here. I do know that this isn't normal. I did check the linkage and adjustment on the transfer case shifter, but what else to check? Also what's your guy's routine for shifting into 4x, do you stop and shift etc?
So far you guys have saved me a tonne of money, so I've got my fingers crossed on this one.
Thanks in advance, Marty
