Shifting into 4x4

Ok I know I've read this before on this site, but I can't find it. I was trying to locate a "popping" sound coming from somewhere in the front end (the axle u-joints have been replaced recently, maybe front drive shaft u-joint) on my '91 4x4 5-spd . The noise goes away in 4Hi, why does this seem expensive? However, I tried to get it into 4Lo but either forwards or backwards nothing happens. The truck doesn't go anywhere. I can hear the transfer case whinning but the truck is in Neutral even tho its in gear either 1st or reverse. Also when I shift out of 4Hi the only way I can get the thing out of 4x is to put it in reverse.

Now this is my first Jeep and the only other 4x4's I've had are a '92 GMC 3/4 ton and a '81 Subaru I'm not exactly sure what to look for here. I do know that this isn't normal. I did check the linkage and adjustment on the transfer case shifter, but what else to check? Also what's your guy's routine for shifting into 4x, do you stop and shift etc?

So far you guys have saved me a tonne of money, so I've got my fingers crossed on this one.

Thanks in advance, Marty

The shift into 4H can be made at any legal speed up to 55 mph.To get into 4Low- Stop, put trans in nuteral, pull back to 4L .It may shift better if rolling at a walking speed or may not.
The more you use the T-case shifter the better it may shift and to get it out of 4H should not be a problem, just don,t try to shift when under power,be in a coast mode.

It's not that uncommon to have to reverse or stop to get out of 4 hi, especially if you have the disconnect front axle, and if you shift out on a hard surface. It helps a lot to make sure your tires are evenly inflated and evenly worn. Rotate often.

As far as going into 4 low, I'd still double-check the linkage adjustment.

Thanks guys, I did check the adjustment again its good to go, and it did finally go into 4Lo. I'm going to spray lube the shifter and linkage again and change T-Case oil and see if this makes a difference. I checked the tire pressure, and i'm going to get the grease gun out and get all the points.

If you have any ideas what that "popping" sound might be or where to look I'd be greatly appreciative. Thanks again, as always you've been a help!
