Scrooges at Discount Tire

I don't think all Discount Tires are the same. I've been going to the one at Dublin and Academy in the Springs for years, and get great service and prices there. The one on the south side of the Springs is less than impressive. I think a lot depends on the store manager. And $100K a year for a store that sells a lot of tires and wheels would not be unusual.

I swung by my local Discount Tire today to have a used set of tires/wheels I have put on my rig. I needed them to dismount the tires from the wheels they're on now and swap them onto the wheels on my rig, then mount, balance, etc. I was blown away by what they quoted me...

Per wheel, $3 to dismount the tires from the old wheels, $3 to mount them to my current wheels, $15 to balance, $2 disposal fee for the old tires, and $5 for an "oversize" tire fee for my 33s. That's $28 per wheel or $112 total! Add in tax and I'm over $120. Yikes! :shocked:

The shop I go to for alignments and general work will do everything for about $80, but they couldn't get me in today. I tried to get Discount to match that, but they didn't even think about it for a second before telling me no. I guess I won't be going back there anytime soon.

What's with the $5 "oversize" tire fee? Does it actually cost more or require special equipment/training to balance a larger tire?

I take mine out to Walmart at Southlands and they charge me 40 bucks to mount and balance. If I just need a dismount they sometimes do it for free or 10 bucks.

This sounds like a lot of things. Store charges more for 'oversized', but I'll bet the tech is hourly and makes the same whether he changes oversized or regular sized tires all day. If any of it went into the guy who actually is doing the work's pocket, I'd be amazed, and a little more willing to pay it.

I think you're confusing the store's total sales with the previous comment that the store's manager's salary totals $100K + bonuses....... maybe?

Again, if that's true....... sign me up!

Troy, I'll confirm for you that a buddy of mine that used to be a GM for Peerless made damn close to $100k, and that was 7 or 8 years ago... he did work his arse off though!:scared:

Holy shit........ If a Discount Tire store manager makes $100K a year + $30K in bonuses........ I'm resigning from the cop shop tomorrow....... I'd be more than happy to call that a "real career". Hell, I'm already labeled an asshat for being a cop........ just as well make more money being a different kind of asshat........

Yeah, and the top grossing store in the Discount Tire/America's Tire is in Denver. The store manager there makes around HALF A MILLION! Yeah some of the sales guys at my store kinda figured out about how much he makes, which is around $150k/year. Hell, hes able to afford a beamer and drive from denver everyday to the store in Fort Collins. Thing is, he gets those bonuses and such, and doesn't do SH*T. I could go on ranting about how fukked up things are there, but theres not much point. Just put it this way, while he does "show" us techs appreciation...not quite as much as he should when were the ones making him all his money.
