Sand Blasting...

Anyone have experience SandBlasting a vehicle. My off road trailer needs sandblasting as it has a sucky paint job. Another board I am on the guys say rent a machine $150.00 ish price range for a week and just buy the sand.

This sounds like a good deal and if I do it myself I may be more particular than a shop?

Open to suggestions or volunteers to help ;)

why not chemical strip? that way you dont have to worry about heat warping the metal. just lay on a couple gallons and pressure wash it off. would be a lot simpler and cheaper than buying many many pounds of sand, and renting the media blaster.

Swap... have you tried this before? Any chemical recommended?

Sounds like a good idea... if pressure washed off... is rust an issue even surface rust would be a PIA to get primer back on quickly.

Yeah I use aeroplane remover to strip metal that or don't want to grind. Rust could be an issue, rust never really has been an issie when I used stripper. But then again I haven't stripped anthing that big. I normally have it back in paint before rust could be a problem.

I've sand blasted small go-kart frames when I was a kid in my back yard using regular sand from a landscaping supply. Worked great, took only a few hours! However its still a lot smaller than a trailer frame. The sand had to be filtered as well to keep out all the big pieces so it wouldn't stop up the nozzle. For me it had to be an all day project so that I could get a rust inhibitor of some kind on the metal before it got dark. If you made it a weekend project though you shouldn't have a problem, the small amount of surface rust that you would get in a day or two could be taken off with some sand paper, which you will have to do some sanding either way if you want a good paint finish. Just make sure you put a coat of a rust inhibitor on it if your going to leave it for more than a few days. Just keep in mind that if your doing it "backyard style" like I did, your going to use a lot of sand, you could lay a huge tarp down and collect most of it and then reuse it but it will be contaminated with paint chips etc. I don't know if it will make a difference but it may stop up the nozzle.

Hope this helps!

O and also if you go this route, make sure you cover all bare skin because it will leave a nasty rash/burn.

Good info. I've always wanted try and see how it works... as my option now is taking forEVER using a wire wheel and it still can't get down in certain places.

sand blasting or media blasting is waaaay better than using a wire wheel. Its like an UN-Spray paint. If you could imagine spray painting a trailer but instead of adding paint its removing it.

Chemical stripper is not a good idea either. You never get all the stripper off and it wil leach out from nooks and crannies and ruin a paint job.
I have sandblasted before and if you need a hand doing this post up make it a GTG we blast and paint.

I've gotta do this!!! I bet its worth it just for the time it saves... let alone the effort.
