Safety glasses.. recommendations?

I'm having laser eye surgery this Wed, and after that, my eyes will be even more succeptible to injury. Safety goggles are top of my list, and I don't want cheap or half assed.

I HATE those cheapie goggles with the holes in the side that lets evertyhing in, and want to steer away from a full face shield.

I do a big mix of woodworking, metalworking, and wrenching, and want to use one for all. Considering getting a dust sealed set.

I'm just wondering what works for you, and what you recommend.

John

Try to find a chemical/splash resistant set. Those shouldn't have the cheap air holes on the side.

But it really sounds like you need scuba goggles. LOL :D

My two cents, don't do one for all. The goggles you use for metalworking will probably get all sorts of abuse, spark melts, scratches, etc. Why suffer with them when you're working on wood? Anyway, some jobs require really clear close vision where others are less critical. I use all sorts of junky stuff when I'm grinding and the like, because I know it will be abused, and keep some good clean wraparound glasses for woodworking.

Scuba goggles may be a joke, but I have been swimming laps in a pool for many years, and when the goggles get leaky, I throw them in the shop as spares.

I'm with Matthew. One size does not fit all. I wear regular safety glasses from Home Depot when working under the vehicle and doing light grinding or drilling, but small stuff can get past those. For serious grinding I use a full-face shield.

I know, I want to have my cake and eat it too. I've been searching, but other than going to every tool store and trying them on, I'm trying to get feedback.....what type sucks, feels wierd, doesn't work, etc

I'm just super anal right now about my eyes....I want to get back to work asap.

I've been doing lots of searching, and I'm probably gonna go w/ a few sets. There are a few sunglass/dust sealed sets that I'm looking at....basically a foam seal on a set of wraparounds or something like ski goggles.
Thanks again...

You mean like those semi-great gov't issue sunglass/clear goggles that snug up so nice under your Kevlar? I know you've got to have at least one pair of those Staff Sergeant...:D

Absolutely, I have at least 2 pairs..... but have you ever used them? One speck of sand, and they're scratched so bad you cant see.

SF and Rangers have switched to commercial specs because the sun/wind/dust goggles aren't safety rated. They do okay in a pinch though.

And that's Staff Sergeant PROMOTABLE thank you.
;)

I've used 'em plenty, PROMOTABLE ;) I didn't say they were the greatest, just that they were available. Are you getting the laser surgery on your own, or is Champus/TriCare covering that these days?

I will tell you one thing... don't do anything potentially damaging to your eyes for about a month..... I have had eye surgery myself and I will tell you one thing: you will not want anything getting in your eyes (EVEN WATER) for about 2 weeks or so!!!!!

Anyways, it's about 4 years or so since my surgery and my optometrist (got warranty on the surgery so I gotta do checkups every year to keep it valid) is surprised how nicely my eyes have healed... but believe me: I was religous about not getting anything into the eyes...

Oh and one more thing: stock up on eyedrops! You will be dry like crazy and using up those like there is no tomorrow for better part of first 6 months!

Two people I know that had their eyes lasered had little plugs put into their tear-duct drains so their eyes would stay wetter

Get a pair of Wiley-X sunglasses. They are a wraparound style sunglass that are made for riding motorcycles. They come with clear and shaded lenses. They are made to have an air-tight seal around your ocular ridge. The pair I have are model XL-1 if I remember correct.

WTF is a Staff Sergeant PROMOTABLE? Is there also a Staff Sergeant NON_PROMOTABLE?

Must be the new Army. When I was in, if you weren't promotable, you were either in the slammer or out on your ear.

I was wondering the same thing. I knew what the (P) was for, but didn't realize them Army guys were so touchy about it, since everybody E5 and above seems to be 'Sarge' anyway.

I remember walking around Taegu and some of the other Army posts confusing the Army with the 'extra things' on my insignia.

That's a Marine Corporal insignia, and of course while we were in cammies (Battle Dress to you dawgies) I wore a set of black metal chevrons on my collar. They would look, look again, and finally ask what those 'things' were.... Why is it that Marines seem to know all the other service ranks, yet those guys didn't even know their own? :D

Eagle, your memory is failing you.....you even congratulated me on my selection to SFC.... and the whole promotable thing was a joke....a few of my buddies even joke around and pull "selection number" instead of rank on each other

Uncle Sugar is paying for the surgery. It's called the Warfighter Refractive eye surgery Program (WRESP)
Only combat arms soldiers can get it. I'm being flown down to Ft Campbell for the surgery.

It will be nice to be able to see from under those Goggles while running down a tank trail at 45mph.

Bad idea from what my optometris told me.... When I originally complained about my dryness problem, he said that yeah this is an option but it's better to wait at least a year. What happens is that the surface of your eye gets flattened a bit and the eyelid doesn't get close enough to the eye to lubricate. This will change but it will take a while :) and it's better then having the plugs as those have potentially some adverse effect (don't remember what it is now...)

Ahhhh.....so you've already been selected for SFC and are waiting for promotion? Okay, in the Corps you would be Staff Sergeant (SSgt) but would be able to say you're on the Gunny Select List. Still makes you a Staff Sergeant though. Congrats on the impending promotion; don't forget us at your wetdown - virtual beer all around!
