hey all,

i need a renix cyl.head. in the process of putting my engine back together and the machine shop informed me that my head is cracked. If anyone in the northern part of ohio has a head hit me up. Thanks

They can't do a pin and weld? It's not just iron - but it's a high-nickel iron, so it should weld well. Drill the ends of the crack (the end of the crack should be at the centre of the hole,) a repair pin is driven in, and then the crack is ground into a V-groove and fill-welded using a nickel/iron rod.

I've not done it myself, but I've seen it done. I'd send you a RENIX head, but it would cost more than the head is worth - shipping from SJC to Ohio is prohibitive...

yea pretty much the shop thats doin all my machine work quoted me 400 bucks to fix the crack and also one of my bolt holes where the thermostat bolts into place is stripped from the previous owner.

funny enough right after i posted this, i talked to the shop today, the guy forgot to mention that he has one on the shelf thats all re-manned, for 375, and i wont have to pay for the work they already did on my head (90 bucks). so i think im gonna do it..

you think its a good price? it will basically equal out to 285 for a re-man head.

Don't know - I haven't checked prices on heads for AMC inline sixes.

However, temper that price with the fact that it's out of production (RENIX hasn't been done, as production, since 1991 - and it's probably folded as a "service part" as well) and the fact that the AMC242 is going out of production this year...

If you don't find one, I have a Renix head on my 96 that will be coming off soon. I bought it for my 89, but never used it. The guy I bought it from said it was reworked by a machine shop and it looked very good. I put it on the 96 because it blew a head gasket and I bought the whole jeep for $600. The XJ runs great now, but I noticed what I thought was a crack in the block when I replaced the head. Smoke on start-up and coolant loss confirmed that I needed to replace the engine. I now have a 99 that I will drop in and I plan to sell the Renix head. $75 plus shipping, but it will be a few weeks before I can pull it as vacation is coming and I'm going camping for six days!

Do you still have the 1996 head, and what shape is it in? If it's AFU, can I talk you into holding on to it until the next time I come out that way? I've started trying to collect heads (from #2685 forward) so I can section them and do some porting experiments, and all I've got so far is #2685 and #2686. I don't care if they're cracked - they're going through a bandsaw sooner or later anyhow...
