Removing Surgical Staples.... DIY mod or see a Dr.?

My son had one in his head (brother hit him with a hoe), and I pulled it myself. They are curled under on the sides. I cut it in the middle with some dykes and gently pulled the ends out as I twisted them. He didn't let out a peep but he's pretty tough. Then I put some anti-biotic cream on the spot and sent him off to play.
I almost borrowed a staple kit from the office for my first aid kit but I was afraid the nurse would walk in as I was helping myself to the medical supplies.
 
ok, their out.... not a peep out of her... she's tough... were good and saved some gas money... woo hoo

she had 5 prods in her, she didnt pull her shirt up high enough when they removed the others... it was a brain fart on both the DR's side and hers.. she called yesterday (after we left) and they said they forgot and she has an appointment next tuesday and they would just remove them then.

I woulda just taken her to the doc. Why chance it? Screw something up and now you've hurt some you love. I just would've made the doc reimburse me for gas money since we had to make the drive again to finish what should've already been done.

Although you did say she has an appt Tues, why not wait til then.

because they were bothering her...

as for risk.... enhh... we could have been hit by a car on the way... lifes full of risk, if i didnt feel confident about it not being an issue, i wouldnt have tried..

and i told her "if this hurts at any time we'll go"... she was as onboard for this as i was... she got a kick out of it too.. her mom will probably kill me though. lol

I don't know, but it sounds as if the greater risk here is going back to whoever sort of forgot to check that all the fricken staples were out. I think I'd be shopping for a new doctor.

X2^^! My wife's an RN and thinks this thread is friggan hilarious! She didn't suggest taking them out yourself but its too late for that now!

I think you only risk 3 things doing it yourself.

1. Infection
2. Tearing the wound open
3. Paybacks, maybe years later. GF "Do you remember that time you were TOO CHEAP to take me to the doctor?!?!?!"
 
I went in to get my 43 or so staples removed from my thigh and the doc did the first few then I asked to do the rest. Pretty much pain free. The staple remover bends the center of the staple and the ends swing up like the doors on deloreans. There is always the right tool for the job!
