Red Jeeps reincarnation

Anyone got a 7/8 reamer I could borrow? Need to drill out the pitman arm for the Chevy 1 ton tre and don't want to have to rip it off the steering box to bring to a shop or spend the $70 for a new one

Like 35 bucks at acetool.com. also idk if the knuckles on that 44 are factory throw but if they are you are going to want a longer pitman arm to get your turning radius back.

And I just so happen to have such a pitman arm already reamed out. $40 comes with a pile of free windows.

Alright so I tried pretty much everything i could to get the pitman arm nut off and still have no luck, not to mention getting the pitman arm itself off after. Is it honestly worth it to take the arm off just to ream it? Or is it possible to ream it while its still on the box bolted to the frame. Obviously sitting under the arm while pushing up and having hot shavings falling on me isnt the best solution but at this point its looking more appealing than getting this pitman arm off

You can ream it when installed. It sucks a little but I've done it.

To get pitman arms off I usually use a puller, put a good amount of tension on it and whack the pitman arm with a sledge a couple times. Tighten puller down more. Whack again, and keep repeating this until it pops off. I have never had to use heat on one.

Been delaying this update for far too long now so have to back track a little, but heres whats been going on. (part 1)

wheeled and shit

broke driveshafts and shocks stuff and bought new shiny things
jcr gastank skid, 12" fox 2.0's shock hoops, stinger (thanks pat!) prothane bumps

welding in the rain was interesting to say the least

didnt want to do a cross bar due to the fact that I actually use my interior space and need to keep the center clear, so plated the wheel well and tied it in to keep it a bit stiffer, when I do a cage ill tie them in a bit better

little tab off the u bolt plate to bolt hockey pucks to. or the actual bumpstop, haven't decided yet

this is in no way a long term solution, I found myself in a pinch and just decided to use what I had. Cut out the stock shock mount and braced it a bit, then just slapped it onto the side of the lower control arm. it gets in the way, i hate it, but ill just deal with it till I put the shocks through the engine bay

motor mounts were shot so I threw in some brown dogs while I was at it, honestly dont know why I didnt do these sooner.

and now they're matching! Still find it hilarious that my bikes fork cost more than all 4 shocks

:worship:

My cat and I had a lengthy discussion about my rockers and he wasn't impressed. Even with the jcr guards I was slamming those so hard it was almost doing more harm than good to my b pillar.

So I went out and got some 2x6, some 1.75 dom and some 3x4 to finish up the truss on the waggy

Considering the drivers side rocker was in the worst shape I started with that, pretty much just cutting away until I found metal that I could weld to. I ended up cutting all the way up to where the step is, and decided id just go as high as I could without needing to trim the window glass in the doors. Still have to figure out the doors but i'll get to that later

I half thought of this out of laziness, but to help seat the 2x6 in place I grabbed some extra angle iron I had lying around, drilled some holes in each side, trimmed here and there, and welded it 2 inches below where I made my cut. Made lining everything up 10 times easier, and helped with getting the angle just right to allow for rain to run off instead of pooling up at the door.

not gonna lie the passenger side came out 10 times better after doing the first

Hank (HRKBackwoods) stopped by to work on our junk at some point during all this

part 2 whenever photobucket decides to work

Coming!!!!! Still got a ton of pics to throw up but photoshop decided to blow it and didn't have enough time before I headed out tonight, ill finish part 2 when I get home

Edit: that was for Adam technology isn't on my side today, still don't know how to quote multiple people too....

I've been lazy and haven't been able to pre reg for rocktoberfest but ill be there. It's going to be complicated given my current situation (ill explain in the next part of the update) but I'm going to need to find a truck and a trailer. Found a friend who's willing to tow, now just need to hunt down a trailer for the weekend. And finish up a 3 link and some other things

And Pat ill be sure to shoot you a text or a call when I'm working on it next, after losing my license/job progress has been a little slow lately but rocktoberfest is coming up quick

part 2

met another 2 door friend

got Brianna to try some welding since she's been pretty curious for a while now

did some mall crawling at a couple jeep shows

did the uca bushings on the 30 and a couple other random things before nacfest

finally got around to putting the stinger on the bumper. Didnt want to just weld it to the bumper skin because I want it to actually be able to hold some weight so I cut holes through the skin and welded it directly to the 2x2 that acts as the front crossmember between the 2 frame tie in plates, then welded the skin to the tubing to make it look clean

loved the way it drove and couldn't have been happier with how the new suspension felt. everything fell into place for nacfest and amazingly red jeep got Brianna and I there and back safe. still have a ton of pictures and video that ill get around to posting later on

came back home, and 3 days later went straight up to Maine for the week, didnt even unpack the jeep from PA. Had a blast tearing up some new logging roads and hitting the old sand pits that always made me wish I had a jeep as a kid

axle swap time!!! already posted a couple pictures but ill go through the swap in a bit more detail.

Got a killer deal on Adams old 44/60. Came with some 15" steelies with a ridiculous backspacing, 4 35" discovery stt's (2 bald, 2 half decent tread), full steering, limit straps, M.O.R.E. steering box brace, and orange braided brakelines. Convinced a buddy to drive his 9" lifted yellow ram with open headers on 35's alllllll the way down to LI and back, without an engine hoist. Somehow got them into his bed with 4 guys, somehow didnt get pulled over, and somehow didnt die with the constant death wobble. Borrowed an engine hoist to get em out buuuut mission accomplished!!

Had to get some u bolts bent up, hunted down a vent hose fitting for the 60 from the bowels of a random drawer in one of the tech's tool boxes at work, and needed to replace the passenger side caliper on the 44 due to the bleeder nipple breaking off. Also ordered a ram 2500 master cylinder to be able to keep up with the bigger brakes. My Dad wasn't too happy about the garage situation to say the least.

Started the swap the weekend after we picked the axles up, and immediately ran into some issues. The most obvious was extending the push rod. Had all the numbers and measurements in my head when I did it, and of course now I'm drawing blanks. Pretty sure it was a 1/4x3" fine thread bolt I trimmed the head down on. Forget how far I extended it, but I measured from the inside of the stock MC, and compared it to how far the push rod sticks out in the 2500 mc, and the difference was how much farther out it needed to be. Still need to play around with it a little since I can still feel some slop in there but can still lock up the brakes no problem.

aaaaaaaand this is why I need to do a 3 link. Like I was describing before, the distance between the lca and the uca brackets are farther apart, making the angle just off enough to be sketchy. Drilled the holes out a bit more and managed to get the bolts through, but the arms are threaded out stupid far and I dont trust it. Drives fine, but a 700+ pound axle on radius arms welded to the crossmember probably wont hold up too well over time.

Also found myself needing to figure out a new track bar situation. Tried using my friends rubicon express mount, but it sat too far back on the frame and would come in contact with the truss at full flex. Didnt want to wait on shipping for a ruff stuff mount, and after a little time thinking I realized the misalignment spacers that came with the track bar fit the inner diameter of the extra 2x6 I had perfectly. So instead of wasting money and waiting on shit I boogered this up! could use a bit more trimming here and there, and when I figure out what im doing in terms of front frame stiffys I might just weld it to the frame. or redrill the holes and weld it to the outside of the stiffeners. But then id need a new bumper sooooo not sure what i'll end up doing. Bolts for now are cheel

After 2 days and 2 pitman arm pullers breaking I was about to give up, and then it just magically fell off. Go figure. Had to ream it out to 7/8 to accept the bigger tie rod end, didnt want to buy my own reaming bit, went to a highschool friends dad's shop (Forte's in framingham) and had it back the next day for half of what I would have spent on the bit itself. They drilled a liiiiittle bit too far so I threw a washer on before the crown nut and it snugged up perfectly

swapping the rear out took all of 20 min. Since the lower shock mounts weren't centered like they were on the 8.8 the shocks were rubbing a bit on the wheel wells, but after a little trimming and they were happy

threw the new caliper on, bled the brakes, tightened/greased everything in the front end and took it around the neighborhood

thanks guys! still got the waggy 44 my bad for not posting everything up for sale yet, shit hit the fan in my life a couple weeks ago and the jeep kinda became less of a priority.

soooo time for the bad news. After a string of dumb tickets for stuff like a 5mph over, fender bender that should have never had the cops involved, got ticketed for my lift and having no fender flares......so by now i've somehow accumulated 8 surcharges on my license since 2012. I did all the drivers retraining courses that I needed to do, but knew that at a certain amount I was going to have my license suspended for 60 days. Got the letter in the mail saying my license would be suspended starting August 14th, put in my 2 weeks for work (my boss was cool with the 2 month break), and assumed that would be that.

Finished the axle swap and knew i'd get pulled over eventually for not having flares. Was coming home from work and had just picked up Brianna not 5 days after the jeep was back on the road and I got pulled over a street away from my house. Cop said he was just going to give me a warning, but after he came back from scanning my license he told me it was suspended and that I was going to be arrested and the jeep was going to be towed......what the ****.

Had no idea what to say except that was impossible, and that I had the letter from the RMV saying I still had another 3 weeks till august 14th. He went back and checked on his laptop and apparently I had 3 overlapping suspensions that the RMV just decided not to inform me about. So I had been driving on a suspended license since june 25th without knowing it. He clearly saw Brianna and I were being honest so he ended up letting Brianna drive the rest of the way back to my house (3 wellesley cops watching a nervous teenage girl trying to drive stick for the first time must have been a good show). But I got slapped with 2 criminal charges for driving with a suspended license, and he made not having fender flares a criminal offense

I've got a court date set for october 6th so I wont even know how long my license is suspended for until then, but this already ****ing blows. Need to find a new job, cant drive, have to deal with all the court and lawyer fees, my insurance is retarded expensive now, and if I get 12 surcharges in a 5 year time span I get labeled a habitual traffic offender and lose my license for 4 years. I'm up to 8 and ive had my license since early 2012. I think now might be a good time to get a stock pick up and blend in for a while, red jeeps just such a target in wellesley.
