Red Jeeps reincarnation

So its finally come time to say goodbye to red jeep as we know it. To give some background, I bought red jeep from Ross back in october hoping to be able to give it a new life and add on to what had already been built. A month later, I was rear ended by a lady and got pushed into the car stopped in front of me, destroying his trunk and the entire front end of the volvo that rear ended me. Cant even tell you how upset I was. The front end took absolutely no damage which honestly surprised me. But considering the lady was going around 35 or so, the trailer hitch got pushed down and the bumper tie-ins crumpled the frame on both sides, arched the trunk, and crumpled the quarter panels. It still drove fine, but insurance called it totalled and so I bought it back. Decided to drive it until I either fixed it, or found a replacement which I really wanted to avoid. Considering ive got hardly any time or resources, finding another 2 door 5 speed with the insurance money and swapping all the parts seemed like the only option.

After beating on red jeep through the entire winter, putting on a couple thousand miles, and driving to and from ma bell twice for its last proper wheeling trips, I found a 97 red 2 door 5 speed with 124k for a little less than what I got from insurance. Bought a RC 4.5 in lift with new leaf packs, and so the swap begins. Probably the most bittersweet thing ive done, its already hard seeing red jeep go. But at least a good amount of parts will live on.

swap time. the end goal is to put in the new suspension, have both axles, the tcase and shafts, control arms, steering rack, bumpers, pistol shifter, throttle body spacer, exhaust, and other bits here and there swapped over to the new jeep. the rears an 8.8 and the front a d30 with a good amount of reinforcement fabricated by Ross. Both with 3:55, the np242 already has a sye, so might as well swap it along with the axles.

My house sucks and doesnt have a flat driveway nor a backyard. Up until yesterday I thought a car couldnt fit in my garage due to the stairs, but with some good space planning we got the door to close. For the new jeep, the road would have to do.

got the 8.8 and 242 out with out much trouble, wish I could say the same for the new jeep.... spent way too much time and way too much money getting those damn shackle bolts out. The bushing sleeve ceased to the bolt making it impossible to pull the bolt out of the hole in the shackle box. After pbing and torching the shit out of 2 of them we just decided to sawzall them off and try and find replacement bolts.

you can really see the buckles in the frame, found some cracks that werent there a couple weeks ago too

2.5 in lift took its toll, but god was having a low cog fun.

gave it a quick spray

out and in the new jeep now. good. the 231 in the new jeep was quite a bit harder since it probably had never been taken out, but after many busted knuckles and a lot of patience it came out.

Michael and I were pumped.

oh and i think theres some nest or somethin in my frame. fuzzy stuff is coming out of the nut in the shackle box. weird.

threw some tires in the wheel wells to make it look like its just a parked car. Im so damn sneaky.

aaaaaand now i have duallies.

so got the rear end from the new jeep bolted into the old one, still need to throw the t case in there and bolt up the driveshafts, bleed brakes, and then do front axle later, but a good start for 1 weekend. just need to bolt in the 8.8 with the new leaf packs and then theyll both be sitting on their own weight at least.

input is always welcome, id rather be called an idiot than do something wrong

looks good so far, I'd see if you could find a rear window that opens at the junk yard & swap it. Would be nice to have the option

WAT? never heard or seen that before... a sliding rear 2-door window?
we shall begin the search colin

the funny part is I have a set of those vent quarter windows. bought them years ago and never put them in red jeep, I finally sold them last week

Put frame stiffeners and rocker replacements in it... wheel it like the other one and never risk a frame/rocker dent again.

I don't envy you on those rear shackle bolts. Getting those bolt stubs out with that little left of the stub is going to be fun.

Ha, you shoulda seen some of the things that jeep did. It would beyond surprise you the things it did down at RC. It was a blast though. I think only the front rails were the only ones still pretty straight and nice.

I believe the plans were to put it on 33's when he finds some... but im just a wrench turner for this project.

Thanks everyone!

Yeah the plan is for 33's when ive got a bit more cash, definitely getting rock rails asap but frame stiffeners will come eventually when ive got time. just need this thing driving and trail worthy for NACfest

please hang those infamous tail lights in your house. also i have a bunch of crappy 33's if you want them for free

we have been looking for similar ones compatible for the 97+.... just cuz :looney:

k so the past couple weeks have been slow. school work killed any free time i had trying to finish everything for graduation, but finally done as of this friday
on a side note im actually really pumped on a documentary i filmed and edited on a service project to the Dominican Republic i went on in april. lost way too much sleep finishing that thing but turned out awesome. anyway, been making slow but steady progress, as it sits now ive got all the rear done, and the front axle and steering setup is ready to go in, hopefully should do that tomorrow. all the suspensions done, all the brakelines redone (they all broke..) diff fluid changed, serpentine belt replaced, header panel swap, front bumper swapped, center console and pistol shifter.

still on the list before nacfest:
1.swap the front end drivetrain/steering
2.swap rear bumper (getting it out of the old one will be fun)
3.reinstall skidplate crossmember (bolts wouldnt line up, got lazy)
4.fix gas tank leak (fuel pump o ring i think, spills fuel when i fill up, need to cut j bolts but im lazy)
5.fix cracked headers and multiple exhaust leaks
6. patch rotted part of frame rail. right behind the DS lca box
7. somehow make the old gastank skid fit
8.somehow afford and install rock rails, but that would require mounting the front mount to the rusty frame rail. and im broke so stiffeners dont sound fun.

doubt ill get half of that done in time but we'll see
ill throw up pics tomorrow

I know exactly how you feel. I bought my 99 and 2 months later some asshat rear ended my jeep and tweaked the body.

alright ive been slacking on keeping this thread going for way too long now, between work and being crazy busy this summer for some reason i kept spacing on keeping everyone updated. ill keep the descriptions short and sweet but ive got a good amount of pictures of whats been going on the past couple weeks.

got the 8.8 in without too much issue, e brake still isnt linked up but ill deal with it later.

the 30 out of the old jeep came out no problem either, gave it a good cleaning and respray, then tried to pull the other one out of the new jeep.

probably spent a solid 2 to 3 days getting this damn thing out. every single bolt was trouble so we ended up needing to get creative with the control arm. aka got really pissed and took a crowbar to it. still didnt work so just cut it in half. those things are like butter :wow:

the trackbar wouldnt come off the frame bracket, so ended up needing to pull the one off the old jeep. simple enough, except for the fact that the nuts are welded to the bracket, and if that weld breaks, youve got a circular "nut" just spinning around and no way to get a grinder in there to cut it. spent way too much time and effort getting this thing off but finally just ended up torching it for 10 min and getting a vice grip around it.

no way in hell is a socket getting on that trackbar bolt.

aaaand the troublemaker. some busted knuckles later and the front was finally out. good thing too considering the lca brackets were completely rusted through and you could probably hammer them off.

also swapped the front clip, hood, and front bumper from the 95 to replace the black one and horribly painted hood. wanted to try and keep as many parts off old red jeep as i could.

everything all bolted up and starting to come together.

then came some nice things

threw em on and just needed to sit and look at it for a bit

cut, folded, and plastidipped the front and got lazy and still havent done the back. whoops.

wheeled it like that for a couple weeks and couldnt have been happier with how she ran, other than some balljoints, u joints, and tre's here and there i was pumped.

then it came time to address the one spot of rot on the body, only problem was it was on the framerail, and the more i poked at it the less i liked.

ended up throwing some ruff stuff frame stiffeners over it since the small brace internally in the rail where it curves up into the lca bracket was still pretty solid. definitely going to beef it up more once i go long arms. also tapped the extra crossmember nuts and threw on the skid plate from the old jeep that Ross fabbed up. love that thing, hopefully ill figure out a way to fab on some brackets when i go long arms rather than buying claytons whole 3 piece crossmember.

aaaand then the manifold cracked in half. more nicethings. also found out the crank sensor melted half way through, but i guess it was being grounded through the manifold since it still worked completely fine. go figure.

and now that i wasnt worried about my body splitting in half, doorless time!!!

around the same time though it came time to get the old jeep out of the garage. and since i had no other space, couldnt find anywhere else to keep it, and no one else wanted to build her back up, it looked like the junk yard was the only option. kept the ricer tail lights to go on a buddys rig so its legacy will still live on through the parts on red jeep 2 and his. but man, letting this thing go was hard. really hard.

got tons of plans for the near future, but im brutally indecisive when it comes to spending money and what should take priority, so any input would be awesome. sliders and long arms are definitely up there on the list.

Finally decided to try and wire in the sound system that the jeeps previous owner had thrown in with the sale. nothing crazy, but for free why not throw em in. lost the wiring harness that came with the kenwood deck a friend had given to me, so once i hunted that down i finally got everything wired up

still need to wire in the second amp to power the door and rear sound bar speakers and tweeters but ill get to it eventually.

aaaaaand nice things came yesterday. got the tj frame brackets so the plan is to either straight up weld them onto the crossmember or integrate them some how, any ideas?
