recovery gear tips please! :)

lets go ahead and throw in a radiator. And while we are at it, some Coolant. Oh and lets not forget a front gear set. Maybe a water pump? What about a crank position sensor and a alternator? Dont forget a starter?

I am not trying to sound like a butt, but where does it all stop?

YeaH, I've never used air or a plug kit trailside

yes, but I also wheel with others, not everyone is 100% prepared, and if you are in their group, it becomes your problem as well.

Don't forget a fuel pump. Actually, ask DJ Josh how much he really wanted to be carrying a spare fuel pump at JV one time. I think two people who were on that run actually carry one now. Haha.

Actually, I think it all stops here:

got spares? by mikedashg, on Flickr

And trust me, I thought about it. Obviously, not ACTUALLY doing it. But wish I could have one with me, hehe. Full set of spares.

When the jeep is full!

But really it's all about risk. Being stranded 50+ miles from the nearest house, especially in the middle of the winter in the mountains, or the desert in summer, is very dangerous, easily lethal. I will NEVER leave the pavement without enough gear to backpack at least four days in any conditions (And if I'm going to be out 1 week already, that means almost two weeks worth of supplies). But that said, I don't want to be forced to go backpacking every time something falls off my jeep, I want to be able to fix it enough to be driveable at least 98% of the time.

Do you want me to list everything I've busted on my jeep out on the trail that could have left me stranded? Or a COMPLETE list of what I actually carry? (it's a lot more than that page worth of suggestions I posted).

I think you should carry a full set of engine sensors. A WP and Alternator aren't that bad of extras to carry if you have some room. Those things could stop you dead in your tracks if they go kaput.

im sure im forgetting alot of what i carry. im not including the food and drink that we all take with us in our coolers.

this is just for a day trip i increase of course if im going camping then i include all that gear as well.

im still refining it every trip i go out to make it smaller and or weigh less.
as i find lighter tools i replace them, lighter boots replace them, smaller jack that goes as high, replace the old ones etc. i think there's great fun in being prepared or at least THINKING your prepared. i know that if i break down and absolutley cant fix it on my own or somehow limp out i can last a week in my jeep waiting for help.

to what RWKHAUS said though he is absolutely right. when you carry this much stuff it HAS to be secured i have a box in the back and everything that sits on top of it is ratchet strapped down. i HIGHLY recommend moving your spare tire OUTSIDE of your xj. more room and its less likely to try to kill you in a rollover.

Something everyone should add to their tools is "Q-Bond".

I saw this stuff for the first time the other day at a Napa and it XXXXs on JB Weld. Comes in a kit that has a powder and liquid. Cracked radiator? Pour on some powder and then the liquid and in 10 seconds its as hard as a rock. The guy demoed it for us at the counter. Pour some powder on a 2x4 then the liquid. It started to smoke. He set the liquid tube on the counter and grabbed a big flat head screw driver and tried to stab it as hard as he could. It was solid, didn't even phase the q-bond.
