Rat Rod (help and/or thoughts)

I have been wanting an Old school open front Rat Rod for some time and finally decided this is the perfect fall winter to do so. As most of yall know who I am and where I work I have plenty of fab tools. I have never built anything like this and was eondering if anyone on here has and if any words of wisdom can be shared.

I really would like to do an Old Coupe chopped and body dropped. Three seater would be perfect since I have 2 kids but a two seater may have to work.

I have very little knowledge in this area but hell I remember when I came on the jeep scene I didnt know shit either lol.

something like this would be badass

No machined or billet aluminum. Build it BILLET PROOF.

My favorite mag for the old rods and customs is Car Kulture Deluxe.

Be creative and use as many old parts as you can find, anyone can order stuff out of a catalog. Search the local swap meets and JYs for cool old stuff. Use the parts you find to shape the direction of your build.

That diesel rat rod is kinda cool, but I think the "Sneaky Pete" is a better rig for a diesel power plant:

Personally, I don't know how anyone enjoys driving around those "true" rat rods with their low roofs, channeled, sectioned bodies and seats that are right on the floor....... but they do look pretty cool.

I too think it would be cool to build a low-buck, frame laying, primer black tire-fryer.....but I don't have a place to store it because it's not really practical as a DD.......I just need a bigger toy box, I guess.

I had that pass me on the freeway going to SEMA last year. It's cooler in person.

You need to head over to the Jalopyjournal.com and click on the H.a.m.b. forum. you'll be there for days or maybe save some coin buying someone elses project.

My overriding thought on the whole "rat-rod" scene:

LEARN

TO

PAINT.

Revise your thinking......try hot rod on the cheap.

Paint job done with rustolium, a roller, foam brushes, and a lot of 600-1200 grit sandpaper:

As you said, "Revise your thinking......try hot rod on the cheap." ;)

rat rods are great fun and easy to please, but just make sure you know where to keep it "rat" and where to keep it clean. start with a good frame and good steering/suspension, don't skimp on the brakes, and do whatever the hell you want from there. I always thought a cool rat rod to build would be to build a bonnie and clyde car full of bullet holes with a nice blown small block......
