I was looking at some of the past post regarding locations to wheel and explore but I haven't seen anything about Garlock or Randsburg! I went there a few years back and really enjoyed it. They have host cabins (some are shanties) you can stay in but they are a 1st come 1st serve. There are some claims that are still worked and privately owned as well as the Burro Schmidt tunnel to no where. The proximity to Death Valley and the Manson famous Barker Ranch is about an hours drive making it a good long weekend getaway!

I've spent a bit of time in the El Pasos, even though most of my time is in Panamint and Death Valleys. Burro Schmidt tunnel is certainly worth seeing. I'd be up for checking more of the area out in the spring.

The Gear Grinders club out of Ridgecrest has done a great deal of work with the BLM to get routes marked and remain open.

Ok maybe get something going March early April! I was really impressed with the beauty of Red Canyon. I heard theres even more riding on the North side. The trails I took had spurs and almost every one led to a mine! I know you are up there Dave how far would it be to do Barker maybe even Panamint city trails from Garlock? I know Panamint is closed! I did P.C. back in the day early 90's when it was open and loved it, but there are other nice trails up there. It would take 2 trips to do both Garlock and P.C. but I think Garlock and Barker Ranch are doable??? I know Barker from Garlock would be a lot of road miles but could be done on a 3 day trip!

on another note I need to up date my Red status, I've just been really really busy! Still need to get the front axle moved another 1" or so forward and go 3 or 4 link haven't decided!

From the "town" of Garlock, it's probably 2 hours to Ballarat. Ridgecrest is 78 miles from PSR; PSR is 1/2 hour further than Ballarat when the pavement is open. From Ballarat to the mouth of Goler Wash (where Barker ranch is) is about 30 minutes. Barker is probably an hour up canyon. Do be aware that Barker Ranch burned several years ago - the remaining walls have been stabilized.

There are a number of interesting side canyons within Panamint Valley. For me, I usually make my base camp at PSR. All of Panamint Valley is accessible from there within an hour at the most.

It would be possible to do a two day trip out of Garlock, going up through Goler Wash, into Butte Valley. Overnight in Butte Valley, then drop into Death Valley and loop around the next day.

Does this mean you're all fixed up Nelson?!! No more radius arm problems?

I'm working on it G Dog. After 20 plus years it finally took a toll on those beauties. I think I will have them bronzed and place them by my boys baby shoes. I cannot decide 3 or 4 link? Picked up some 14 Bilsteins to replace my 12 (one had broken). I was just looking at it today. I have room for either but I need to pull the trigger. My current lca's mounts that are level with the frame (unibody) can work for either choice! If I go 4 link, I should make the current lca mounts I have, the upper arm mounts so I can angle the arms in to the center of the axle and make some new mounts in the middle of the cross member for the lowers so I can dbl triangulate and remove the Trac bar. If I go 3 link I have room on either side of the axle. I just need to know if any 3 link XJ's are running 40" or 42" tires, not that I will, I just want over kill. I need to know if the top and bottom CA frame/cross member mounts can be level to each other (on the same plane). I know the arms do not have to be the same length.
My other dilemma is how long I should make the lower arm axle mounts so I may use them as shock mounts as well without causing axle torque on the mounts.
Once I decide I can have it done in a day. The only thing left to do is exchange my steering box with my drilled box and install my hydro assist ram. The mount is done!

try to get your frame separation closer to 8"-9" and about 8" at the axle

and avoid moving the upper link too far to the center of the axle tube, the less "triangulation" you have will help prevent brake pull.

I've only done a few elliptical & 4 links in the rears (much easier) and in the front straight CA, 5 link mods in the past so mounts other than caster/camber & horizontal angle are really the only concerns I've had.
Frame separation, I assume your talking about the distance between the UCA and LCA frame cross/member mounts which I am aware of. I was unaware of the distance between the upper and lower CA mounts on the axle to avoid brake steer! But it makes sense, sometimes brake steer can occur on the 5 links not done right or weak spring rate!
What should the height difference on both the frame mounts from lower to upper CA mounts be. I know on the axle as much as the clearance you have for it, but I do not think that matters on the frame end, does it?? Lastly the length on the axle lower control arm brackets, can they be longer than just enough room for the heim, or can they be a few inches longer to accommodate room for the shock mount?
Crashing and :flame: would suck unless your this guy:firedevil!!!

HA! I guess I hijacked my own thread!
