Ram-air induction???

Hey everyone, it has been awhile since I have been on here bc of being in afghanistan. But now that I am home I have more time to cruise the forums. One thing I was thinking about doing was possibly cutting a 4-6 inch x 6-8 inch part out of the hood over the intake, craeting a ram air. I wouldn't be just leaving the hole there. I would be welding or bolting it up at an angle to direct the air to the intake. The reason why I was thinking about doing this is bc today I noticed that there is no direct air flow to the intake.

So what i am asking for is that has anyone ever done this? If so do you have pics? And the other thing is what do you think about this idea? I appreciate everyones input and suggestions, thanks.

I don't think it would be worth it.
To get 'true' ram air you'd have to be moving pretty fast, considering the vacuum caused just by touching the gas, I think that air velocity is moving faster then the XJ is gonna be moving.

"RAM AIR" intakes really just provide easier flow, but ram air looks and sounds cooler in a sales pitch. Normally a short intake tube to a cone filter, thats about it.

Then there is 'Cold Air" intakes, which again make flow a little easier and shield the filter from the exhaust manifold (hothot).

If you check out the rest of Dyno's site (one linked above) you'll find some cheap and easy ways to getting colder air into your engine.

Good luck, and where were ya in Afghanistan? My buddies just got back from Kandahar and surrounding areas, I was there a few years ago a few times. Nice place to visit but I wouldn't want to live there.

For ram air to work you have to have a correctly designed Nozzle or diffuser and you have to be moving about twice as fast as the fastest speed of an XJ for it to begin to work.

I have had good results with ram-air setups, mostly on higher compression/performance motors. I did a ram-air conversion on a wimpy 3.1 V6 in a 91 Camaro last year (I swapped to the IROC type dual front air cleaner and ran alum tubes to behind the grille and it was a little faster. Would it work on a stock 4.0? Who knows.
