im going to look at a frame tomorow i may aquire in trade for an old car sitting out back.

its a 1960 cj5 frame with d44's 5:38 gears, its also on got good wheels/tires.

i know there were 3 different widths of axle that could be used in the cj5, and also i know it may not have 2 d44s. is there anything else i should know about theese things, or things to look out for? just cureious. im interested most in the axles.

thanks guies

Bronz its a narrow track axle, one width. The rear axle could also be a Dana 30, the front is probably a Dana 27 or 25. I have 3 hoods if you need one. which motor does it have the 4 cylinder or the 6?

My first jeep build was a 78 cj5. I took it completely apart except for the factory rivets. Cleaned it all up, rebuilt what I could and put it all back together. Had a great time in it too. I have some parts hanging around if you need them John. Mine was a D30 / AMC20 set up.

Yes I had a 1978 also, only mine was a CJ7 I also had the Dana 30. I'm not sure anymore what rear axle I had, but I dont think it was the AMC20. I also had the 304 V8 with a manual 3 spd. The one John is looking at is too old to have a 30 though, I'm pretty sure it's a Dana 25 or 27

i had a 73 cj5, and it came with a dana 44 in the rear, and a 30 in front. the axles are way too narrow to use on pretty much anything but an early cj or something like a samarai. i don't think you can even put them under an xj with spacers for the wheels, as the backing plates will probably hit the leaf springs....

I think in 1972 is when they changed over to the Dana 30 because AMC started putting 304s V8 into Commandos, and probably the CJ's
