Question for XJ Offroaders

Jeep said:
I have a '92 XJ and my question is do I take this stock XJ and fix it up and build it up somewhat? Or since I'm starting from scratch do I sell the XJ and look for a Wrangler to build? Which is the better wheeler? I'm not really into rock crawling. But like to trail ride, climb a few hills and playing in the mud is fun also. I plan on going to Colorado this Summer and having fun on the beautiful Mountain Trails. Thanks for the help, Michel

Sell that Cherokee and buy an 85 toyota 4 runner with EFI and solid front axle. Much better then your cherokee for off road.

Stronger axles (good for up to 38s)
Easy to do High steer.
Stronger Transfercase (gear driven not chain)
Easy and cheep to do a 4:1 in the transfercase.
Has a frame!!
Is a narrower body but still has good wheel base.
Can swap the third members from the front to the back.
Has Leaf spring suspension at all 4 corners, cheaper easier more reliavle then a lifted cherokee suspesnions with that front 5 link crap.
Fairly easy to do a 4.3L chevy engine swap into.

Why did I build a cherokee?

Did you really expect anyone to say " Yeah, buy the Wrangler cause XJs suck."

Go with the XJ and go places only megawranglers can go and further.

Wheel base is where it's at baby.

buy the wrangler, cause xj's do suck...
wtf is a megawrangler? stop smoking crack
it really depends on what you are looking to do. yjs and tjs do have a frame, which is a huge benefit when it comes to extreme modification. they also have a removable top without using a sawzall...
i love yjs almost as much as my xj and in a lot of ways i wish i would have taken the yj route, but i also like my xj.

i couldn't agree more with you ash, you made all the points i would have as well. i don't know why i built an xj either...pita!
ultimately, if you want a badass crawler, it will be about the same amount of work on just about any platform... but yjs and 4runners are just plain easy to build.
