Question for XJ Offroaders

I have a '92 XJ and my question is do I take this stock XJ and fix it up and build it up somewhat? Or since I'm starting from scratch do I sell the XJ and look for a Wrangler to build? Which is the better wheeler? I'm not really into rock crawling. But like to trail ride, climb a few hills and playing in the mud is fun also. I plan on going to Colorado this Summer and having fun on the beautiful Mountain Trails. Thanks for the help, Michel

it's raining today in phoenix, and it never rains here. My roommate who loves his wrangler rode to school with me today because there was an inch of water in his front seats. I asked him why he didn't put his soft top back on after wheeling this weekend. he told me it was easier to ride with me (lazy ass). my vote? if you want a vehicle that can take you anywhere, in total comfort-rain or shine, keep you xj.

Is this NATJA?
NAYJA?
:nono:

Did you really expect anyone to say " Yeah, buy the Wrangler cause XJs suck."

Go with the XJ and go places only megawranglers can go and further.

Wheel base is where it's at baby.

Both would be nice, but for me there's nothing like a XJ. I have rode in about every kind of Jeep out there, and nothing compares to a LWB.

Keep the XJ. I bought my '92 last May, replaced the stock coils and springs with an OME kit and am currently running 275 Wrangler RT/S tires. We took the Jeep to Colorado and participated in the Mile High Jeep Club's All-4-Fun event. We had a blast with our stocker XJ. There's a lot of places that the XJ will take you. Each time I go out wheelin' I amazed at what I can do and it's only going to get better as I upgrade parts and components. The nice thing about the Cherokee is that you have ample room for camping gear, etc. and a nice, dry place to put it plus have the ability to carry two other passenger if need be.

First of all did you really expect anyone to say go with the Wrangler???? :laugh2: Anywho KEEP THE XJ. I used to have a Wrangler and was a die hard, Jeep wave, never own another kind of Jeep guy. Then it came time to go off to college, (not to mention the $7,000 I spent on repairs on the Wrangler in 2 years), and I needed more room. The dealership I work at had a Cherokee sitting in the weeds that they could not sell so I got it for cheap. Now all my friends that had Wranglers cussed at me and said well I gues he aint goin off the pavement anymore....needless to say now i just wave when I pass them stuck somewhere before pulling them out. Bottom line XJs stock will do more than a Wrangler and with a lift, bigger tires, and skid plates will out do all but the heavily modified ones in my opinion. Not to mention I haven't put one dime into my XJ (besides routine maintance) in the 9 months I've owned it and with the YJ that same amount of time added up to roughly $3200. KEEP THE XJ! :worship:

Yep, use to have a CJ5, 2 people, a cooler, & 2 packs, & your full. My 76 Bronco was better, w/ more room, But like the others here, I love the XJ.
$.02

If you buy a wrangler, at some point in time, you WILL be towed out of the woods by an XJ!!

I used to have a CJ-5 and not having a hardtop can be a real PITA. With out a hardtop you won't want to leave anything inside the Jeep. I was always worried about some one ripping off stuff out of the CJ.

Thanks for the feed back - this is what I wanted to hear  . I've owned this XJ for almost ten years. It has mostly just been a go to work and such type auto. But now I want to start offroading and need to figure out what to do. So I think I'll keep and work on building up the XJ. I'm sure I'll be asking lots of questions from you folks that have "been there and done that". Thanks again - Michel

Get both :D , we have 1 98XJ, 2 97TJ's and an 89YJ Hard top. All purpose the XJ is the hands down winner. Comfortable, rides well, plenty of storage and with a safari rack much more storage. We have gone on many vacations and trips with ours as a family. The roof rack keeps the interior clear of luggage and other clutter so that you can keep the travel necessities inside like a cooler and munchies or a pet.
That said there is the really nice option on the TJ's of having the top off and all that goes with that.

Out of all the things though, the single biggest improvement that jeep ever did was add fuel injection IMO. I have had two jeeps that were carbed and both were a royal PIA.

OK, well first of all I dident read all the post but I did read the first one....

I own both a Wrangler and an XJ. XJ's are by far a MUCH better off-road vechical from the show room floor than a Wrangler (excluding Rubicons). You put a XJ with a 3" lift and 31's against a YJ with a 4" lift and 33's and the XJ WILL walk all over it. XJ's have alot of flex in the front, flex is something older Wranglers lack in. Also XJ's have a longer wheel base wich helps alot off-road too. If your going to daily drive the thing then there is no other choice than the XJ.

To hell with this crap. I've had an XJ, a YJ, then an XJ, then a TJ, then an XJ ... personally, I can't have one or the other - I need both. The XJ's are very capable, but I would rather stroll through the woods or across a mountain pass with the doors off, topless, and windshield down. The XJ is a much more pleasant DD and foul-weather wheeler. I love 'em both! :)

I have both a TJ and an XJ both of which are lifted with bigger tires. I usually end up taking the XJ because of having more room for gear. Most places for me to go offroading is at least a 3 hour trip one way so I usually end up making it a weekend and camping somewhere. Also, it seems ther are too many built up Wranglers in the world. Can't go anywhere without passing one. Sure, there are alot of XJ's around too, but not many are built up nice. I get way more looks and stares in my XJ than I do in my TJ. Plus it's fun to out wheel a Wrangler owner in my "grocery getter". I also like to hunt with my dad and brother and its easier to carry 3 deer out of the woods with the XJ. So, to make a long story short, the TJ went to the wife and I kept the XJ.

I have owned a CJ and a XJ. The XJ is the better if you like the creature comforts like warm in the winter, cool in the summer. Be able to hear the radio a 60 MPH etc...............

The XJ has more room to put stuff (people and coolers). The roof rack come in handle too.

AND they are tough ---- 4 wheeling and reliable!!!!

I vote for XJ
