Question for those of you that have changed your own evaporators

I recently purchased a used Jeep Cherokee with the 4.0. The A/C was dead, recharged it with a $9 can of R134 and leak detector. Went dead again in 1 week. Counldn't find a leak with the black light in the engine compartment at all. Suspect the Evaporator. Reseached on the net a little and a leaking evaporator seems to be a popular defect. Was wondering if I could braze the old one once I take the whole dash apart. Trying to save $120 for an aftermarket one or $300 for a OEM which appartantly suck.

My main question is: Where exactly do the evaps start leaking? ( Trying to figure out if the area is even brazable.

Thanks,
Nick

First off, do you have a vacuum pump to purge the system when you are done? If not, leave it to the professionals. A can of UV marker dye will find the leak for you. Oh, and by the way, just cracking the AC and letting the coolant out to work on it is now a federal crime. You are supposed to suck it out using a reclaiming system.

"Went dead again in 1 week." Sue Chrysler for breaking the law, they fitted the crappy evap on the truck.

Sue YOU for blindly recharging it without fixing it. :D

I have accessed mine...pulling to dash was a pain, I ended up just cutting it in half.

I'm with the old one...take it to a pro.

have it evaced. put dye in it. find problem. fix problem (yourself, if you can)

refill. be cool...be happy.

BON VOYAGE. don't feel bad....I think the clutch is dead in mine. Good thing I work where I do.
