I have always thought about using wrap before. But I see a lot of deep water. I have heard stories/theories of the wrap holding water for longer and causing the exhaust to potentially rot faster.

as hot as that gets, I can see that that would hold water long.

Even here in the northeast I've never had a significant rust issue with a manifold. Some surface rust sure, but nothing more than that.

The pipe starts rusting a few inches below the O2 sensor bung but mostly stays intact till after the converter. I believe it stays hot enough that far upstream to simply boil things off before they can really cause much damage. Not sure how salt plays into that, it seems a bit counterintuitive but I have to work with the evidence I have.

I never gave the water problem a thought. I think it's like Dan said. It so hot it would dry off pretty quick. Besides, the hedder is stainless steel. There wasn't any rust on it at all even down at the end with the o2 sensor and it's about 9 years old or so.

Generally speaking, headers and downpipes last because the moisture in the exhaust has no time to accumulate anywhere. After the CAT is a different story and condensation combined with sulferdioxide takes it's toll.

I only gained about 6" taking the wheels off since I had to leave enough room for the crane. But it stilled made a nice difference for my short ass!

As a side thought. I plan on keeping the head off the bad '98 motor since I'm taking it apart anyway. Just in case the head on my '00 gets that famous crack.

Funny how there are some differences between a '98 and the '99 motor.

Like the oil pressure sending unit.

Use your old sending unit to keep with your factory harness. They should both screw in, right?
