I picked up the paint this afternoon. Assuming I get the rest of the body work done this weekend, all I've got to do is get a good respirator sometime over the weekend/week and I'll be ready to go next weekend.

Respirators are for sissies and people who want working lungs when they're 50. You know you want to remember what color your XJ is every time you blow your nose for a week...
Can't wait to see how this thing runs! It looks pretty awesome just from the pictures. This thread and the one about the fully-rebuilt OD/camo MJ (I can't find it anymore!) are really what got me hooked on

I think you were kidding, but the lack of smilie makes me wonder. There is no way anyone anywhere anyhow should use automotive paint without the correct respirator. This isn't your basic Krylon or Rustoleum, this is serious stuff that'll do some serious damage. Just look at a can and read the labels makes you want to be covered. If you're bored look up polyisocyanates (just one of the harmful things in the paint).

Even in a ventilated paint booth spraying that stuff for just a minute can have an effect. Be careful with that stuff in your little garage.

A word to the wise... If you do a rebuild on a factory box adn drill and tap it make sure all the bolts are really tight before wheeling it! :shhh: :thumbup:

I heard a rumor the jeep go painted today... pics are needed!
Sorry for the lack of updates here; the weather last weekend (snow) really hit me that I needed to get my rear in gear and get it painted before it got any colder and I couldn't. I had a TON of late work nights during the week (1:30-2am deals) to get the hatch welded in, the patch panels made, body smoothed and the prep work done. The almost last thing that was on my mind was "oh boy, I need to shoot pictures for the build thread". Anyway, I do have a few pictures that my better half took.
I finished cutting the floor area and welded that on top of the structure I had made previously. I think it turned out pretty neat.
I removed the handle from the hatch and made a patch panel to cover the hole.
Then I positioned the hatch, welded it, made some patch panels (six total) welded and blended them in, first coat of primer and wet-sanded it. Colin (MoparManiac) and another buddy of mine then came over Friday evening to serve as a distraction and show off their trucks. :spin1: After they left I spent some time re-sanding the areas that needed it. (Sorry not pictures of any of that)
I stripped the XJ down to nothing, shot a second coat of primer, wet-sanded the entire thing a second time.
Then, with the help of my father (Thanks Dad!), I got to work cleaning, serious cleaning. Man I knew that grinding dust got everywhere, but it isn’t fun to clean up. Bought some plastic and firing and turned the garage stall I work in into a makeshift paint booth.
All masked off ready to go:
Shot some paint. I’m pretty pleased with the product I used, it has some serious warnings, but it wasn’t to hard to spray and I think it came out pretty darn good for someone like myself who has never used anything other than a rattle can. I used Nason (DuPont) 2K Urethane single stage shot through a 3M (Accuspray) Complaint gun with a 1.4 tip.

Here is a shot of the hatch blended in with the C-Pillar. I don’t think it turned out too bad at all.
