Here's a picture of my drivers side TRE at the knu

ckle. Notice how I had to use washers to put the castle nut high enough up on the stud to be able to secure it with the cotter pin. When I took the old TRE off it was not like this and the old TRE mounts up the same as this one now. I'm thinking it may have wallowed out the hole in the knuckle. Opinions?

I used to see that a lot more often(20 years ago) than I do now. Yes, you need a new knuckle.
Adding washers is not an approved repair., Or you could drill it out for rod ends and build a new tie rod. Think of it as an opportunity for improvement.:)

Goferit.

SGTMACK, That's not what I was wanting to hear. I figured that may be the case though.

Rev, I'll post a pic of that tonight.

I wonder what the lead time is on JCR one ton steering... I wanna go wheeling at AVF in two weeks.

Why not use a Goferit insert?

Only issue may be with clearance with the rim.
If you stay under the knuckle, I think it might work. Over, likely will not clear.
Cheap and easy.

The Goferit inserts would only solve the problem of the knuckle being wallowed out. I would still be stuck with the stock steering and would need to replace the knuckle if I was going to do anything but heims. I would rather use a TRE for the ease of getting replacement parts as needed. When things break, you're supposed to upgrade right? :gee:

True, but it could be a bandaid until the JCR steering got to you, especially if you have a run coming up ;)

I would then have to replace the knuckle before installing the JCR steering anyways. I'll go and buy a spare axle assembly before I throw the good money after bad. Then I'd have spare knuckles, shafts and uni-bearings.

Will JCR's stuff work with stock rims? There's not much clearance there, I know there wasn't on mine anyway.

Oh, Daryl!!! Brain!!
Will it work?

I'm not sure if this will help any to show the castor.

Dunno, looks like there's a fair amount of caster in there already.

Kunaji, if you go the junkyard axle route, I've got a complete 3.55 D30 in the garage 35 miles north of Rochester.

I went the boneyard axle route. Spent two hours at a local boneyard wrenchin. Now I've got spare shafts and unibearings. Plus I can send the knuckles out to be reamed and have it regeared and still be driving the jeep. It's a bitch trying to get work done when you're in the office two weeks before you get a day off. What else do you have just sitting in the garage? Maybe we can work a swap or something.

Well, after I got off work I hurried up and replaced the knuckle before I ran out of light. I had forgotten how nice it was to be able to drive the speed limit without the jeep trying to kill me!! It goes down the road nice and smooth, for a jeep, and now we can add the knuckle being wallowed out to one of the causes of DW.
