porting a head for a stock 4.0 ????????????

I had two bum Crane lifters. One collapsed completely without any wear, and the other stopped rotating in its bore so the cam lobe ate itself and the lifter away. Maybe there was nothing wrong with the Crane cam from the beginning but I can't say the same about the lifters though.

I'm starting to think that the Crane Cam may not be the problem, but the lifters are more of the problem.. I have Sealed Power lifters on top of my Crane cam, which are a product of Federal Mogel. One of my lifters ticks for a couple seconds when starting the engine cold, so it may be on its way out.

Anybody know who manufactures the lifters for Crane?

When cams fail, it's that that cam was not hardened properly.

If lifters fail, they fall apart or the plungers don't move.

I think you either had bad lifters, or too much lifter preload such that you collapsed the lifter.

sense you are new to the form i should be saying us the search and find Dr Dyno post on his cam failer but...............this isn't it but a good artical on it.

Definitely not too much preload. All my lifters had a preload of about 0.047". I think that two of them were just bad and since it's likely one of them stopped rotaing in its bore, it took out a cam lobe. Needless to say I was pissed off, especially as my engine had already passed the 30000 mile mark and I was expecting the cam to last the lifetime of the engine.
