Political Bribery - Obama style

Sestak admits that he was offered a "high level" Federal job by the Obama Administration if he would pull out to the Pennsylvania Senate race against Specter. He did not and defeated Specter.

The public has a right to know exactly what happened, and whether a crime was committed.

White House Press Secretary Robert Gibbs has dismissed the issue saying that “Lawyers in the White House and others have looked into conversations that were had with Congressman Sestak, and nothing inappropriate happened.”

Senior Obama adviser David Axelrod has said the same thing, although he has admitted that if it did actually occur, it would “constitute a serious breach of the law.”

But what is very curious (and revealing) about this is the refusal of Gibbs or anyone else at the White House to say exactly what was said in the conversation and who made the offer – we are apparently just supposed to accept their self-evaluation that nothing “inappropriate” happened.

There are obviously three possible scenarios here.

Rep. Sestak is either
1) telling the truth
2) lying
3) the conversations didn’t take place in the manner that Sestak has recalled.
In all three cases, however, we need a full accounting of what occurred because each scenario has important political and legal implications. Sestak, as an elected official, also has an ethical obligation to reveal the details of what happened, particularly if a crime was committed.

His position that he has “said all I’m going to say on the matter” does not meet his fiduciary responsibilities to the public or to Congress.

Section 600 statute states:
Whoever, directly or indirectly, promises any employment, position, compensation, contract, appointment, or other benefit, provided for or made possible in whole or in part by any Act of Congress, or any special consideration in obtaining any such benefit, to any person as consideration, favor, or reward for any political activity or for the support of or opposition to any candidate or any political party in connection with any general or special election to any political office, or in connection with any primary election or political convention or caucus held to select candidates for any political office, shall be fined not more than $10,000 or imprisoned not more than one year, or both.

Ok, Bill Clinton and Joe Sestak both say it was Clinton that made the offer, and that Rahm Emanuel was in on it, so that means Obama approved of it--BAM! Conspiracy to commit a federal felony IS a federal felony.

...and we believe this is the 1st time any of the three scenarios have happened in US politics why?

I am not saying any of the scenarios are right or moral but don't seem to recall the fervor on NAXJA when the last administration was in office. If we are truly freedom loving individuals can we at least acknowledge that we have had a sucession of bums running the country for my life time?

Politicians acting according to their nature. Meh... big deal.

It is only in the news because some think it is a juicy 'Look at the big bad Obama' story.

I don't care if the White House did it or not, they asked, he said no, it would not be the first time a politician threw their weight around for their own benefit.

Complacency breeds acceptance.

The "Meh...big deal" attitude is what's created this problem.

This isn't an isolated Obama issue, it's a pattern of graft, greed and corruption that We the People have allowed to become "OK" in our government because we haven't held the offenders accountable.

I suppose you'd also be fine with a local gang member groping your wife or girlfriend while she's in line at the local quickymart.......... after all, gangsters will do that, right?

I am convinced that "We the People" get the government that they deserve.

The men who risked everything to hack out a freedom loving life in this country understood that it was up to the individual to make it on his own. The 'Government' was established simply to see to it that the enviroment of freedom was not infringed upon.

I don't mean to come off as if I don't care about the Government, but more like , I give up... as in there is very little that I can do to change the way people vote.

Thru out history, democracies will last for exactly as long as it takes the lazy to find out that they can use the power of the government to take from the industrious.

I believe that this country has reached a tipping point. The saturation of the lazy and dishonest has reached that level.

Agreed. Yet a tipping point doesn't have to mean that we relent to the cancer of Socialism that had crept into both dominant parties.

This didn't happen overnight.
There are now more Socialists in Washington than in the history of our country.

I fear more the cancer of Socialism or the "What have you done for ME lately?" additude among the voting public. They are the ones that voted the Socialist types to office.

There may be a few upticks of freedom in the 'tipping', but the slide, I fear, begun some years ago, and has just picked up speed on the way.

Back to the original topic, in the list of things wrong, I think that the trying to talk Sestak out of running is pretty low.

Matters not what you believe, get out and vote. November will be the best way any of us can show our love or hate of the current government.

Vote, vote, vote. That and continuously write/call your congressman and senators. Tell them how you feel about current and upcoming bills.

If you do not think your vote will make a difference, then don't vote. But keep your mouth shut about the aftermath. There are far to many whiners who then admit they didn't vote. One vote does make a difference.

Been saying this for a long time. I haven't been a fan of Bush since about two years into his first term (in my opinion, he did exactly the right thing at least at the start of handling the 9/11 disaster, but fell off track soon after that.) Also, I'd like to note that I didn't vote for him OR Obama... I voted for Badnarik in 04 and Ron Paul + Bob Barr (write-in, could not stand Barr as Prez and could not bring myself to vote for him as a Libertarian, but could not think of anyone else to write in for VP) in 08.

We need to get all of them out at once, it's like rust or cancer, if you leave any of the old corruption in place it will just spread again. Sadly, this will never happen.

Saw an interesting line, 'politics is all about converting private property to political uses'.

Obama/Emanuel/Clinton won't be charged despite the admitted violation of federal law--after all, all animals are equal, but some animals are more equal than others!

And political animals are the most equal of all.

By the way,.. could a mod change the title to: "Political bribery: Obama(lack of)style" 'cause, man, they sure screwed this one up.

Don't count on that, they may have been pushing the envelope, elections are coming up and I bet it gets nastier, they are not going to give up power and they have already proved they have no ethics or morals just like any other politician.

Oh, I don't think it's going to get any better Rich,... I'm just surprised how badly the bribe was botched. The guy's from Chicago. Didn't he learn ANYTHING?
