PITMAN ARM PULLER

Okay so a couple of weeks ago I was attempting to install a new pitman arm. Well needless to say the piece of crap puller I got from autozone bent. What would be a decent puller? And the difference between the enclosed puller or the two arm puller? Has anyone had any luck with harbor frieght ball joint presses as well?

I broke one of the pitman arm pullers too. Once you break one you see how much force you can put on it (like a 12 inch wrench, not a 24 inch). Once you put that force on it, you start heating the pitman arm with a torch. You will notice that the cheap ones are cast. That is what I have. If I break this one too, next time I'll buy a FORGED one. Then maybe I can use a 18" breaker bar.

I did the tighten, heat, hammer, repeat couldn't get it. Used the electric impact got it off in 30 sec. Used a Mattco 2 arm puller (from e-bay) if I remember correctly.

Air hammer on the side of the pitman arm works too.

I have a ball-joint press from HF...I think I paid 25 bucks...worth every penny!!

I looked at that same Snap On Pitman Arm puller, but for just a few times of use that's a chunk of cheese. Crap I bought their reamer, paid a butt load for that and have only used it limited amounts of time.

Yeah, the reamers are tough to come by though. I used mine once and now it'll sit for the rest of it's life. A good puller might be worth the money though if it can be used on other stuff. Me, I'd do the PB with the local puller and let it soak over night. Then tap it with a hammer and go from there.

do this...its twice as fast as a pitman arm puller, and uses no muscle.

cut 2 slices on each side of the pitman arm (preferred weapon being a 4.5 inch angle grinder) once you start getting close to the splines be very careful. if your not that comfortable yet with an angle grinder, after making it most of the way through grab a chisel and stick it in the cut and wack it a time or two until the cut cracks. after youve done this on opposing sides of the pitman arm you can reach up and pull it off with your hand.

done my last 2 like this and it takes about 10 mins. no broken tools, no broken PS boxes, no cussing etc
