Can someone tell me how to put a PDF file on a thread I want to start?

Same way you put up a picture, I'd guess - host it somewhere and link to it in the thread. I'd not try to post it directly into the thread - a .pdf takes a little while to load because the browser has to invoke Acrobat and get started - and if you still don't have Acrobat, it will either give you a blank screen (likely) or it could hang (less likely, but I've seen it happen.)
Make sure to let everyone know it's a PDF in the link text, and include the filesize when you do. That way, people can get an idea of load time based upon their system and connect speed...
