painting some under body components...

Dino's 99XJ

NAXJA Forum User
Well I think on this build I want to paint some of the 'key' components under the XJ so they stand out a little and for the fact I have never done it on an XJ build.

Problem is this, my XJ is Chili Pepper Red Pearl Coat and I don't want to have to spend a ton of money to match paint codes, just looking to put some heavy duty style bedliner spray or roll on coating. So decisions will be the standard colors available at any Napa, Autozone, Wal-mart, etc..

What do you think would look good?

Pros and cons of different paints/bedliner?

Thanks all

What are the 'key' components you want to paint?
All of them colored bed liner?
Roll on works better than.spray for bedliner, and duplicolor has great product.

want to do the diff covers, steering components, skids, things like that. leaning towards charcoal since they have it on the shelf and my new wheels are charcoal, thinking that would look great with the dark red. don't really care if it is roll on or spray I guess since most of those items are round and I would have to take them all off to paint, I will have the diff covers off to paint when I do lockers/fluid, the body I will end up wanting the same color for the lower portion I plan to paint to make it a two-tone look. just really don't want all standard black like on most peoples..

If you're going for a charcoal type color then I highly suggest the brush on Rustoleum Hammer Finish Black. It dries to a very nice dark grey with black veins and is nicely shiny too. Look through my build thread and you'll see its what I've used on my sliders, steering, bumper, etc. It goes on nice and thick, its very durable, and its not very expensive either. I think around 12$ per pint. There are a lot of guys on Pirate (including Ashman) who use it on their buggy chassis instead of powdercoating because its easier to do touch up work with.

X2 on the Hammer finish.

For the love of god just don't be one of those people who paints their diff covers, steering, and all other crap some color to "stand" out (i.e. neon green, etc.).

If your going to do it, make it so it looks good but isn't noticeable unless your kind of close.

I just don't get the painting thing...when you rocking stuff like stock axles, steering, suspension (even aftemarket), etc. unless its something that you might normally see (black, charcoal, gray, etc.)

Guess i'm just in the less is more kinda camp.

Well...and when you scrape, break, bend any of those components...ya won't feel so bad either.

Hammered black is probably one of the best looking, best lasting paints out there...i'll be doing my chassis in hammered black.

I buy satin black krylon by the case, and always know what color I need to patch up the scratches...

PO of my rig enjoyed school bus yellow underneath. Makes me want to bop him in the nads. Every time I bump something with my sliders, diff or tie rods, nice chunk of sh!t yellow beams through the flat black.

Grr.

The brush on version is way better, its almost like painting on a powder coat.

I've only used it on bare metal, and when doing so just wipe it down to remove grease/oils and paint away. You do 1 coat, let sit for 30min, and then paint the second coat.

Home Depot and Lowes. Just get the cheap brushes as there is pretty much no point in trying to clean them, and where some latex or neoprene gloves too as it doesn't come off your hands very easily either.

Yeah, I've heard either brush it on, or use an actual spray gun to spray it. Using it out of the can doesn't give as much texture.

I bought two quart cans for my chassis, axles, etc.
