Overhead Console Help Needed!

Hey, guys. I posted this on another Cherokee Forum (dead give away....) about an overhead console I picked up out the the JY the other day. My Jeep's a 1993 Cherokee Base, 2.5L AX-5. Not a lot of bells and whistles....Anyway, I saw the console and was like "Ooh, need that!" So, I got it....Here begins the headaches.....

Got home with it and the harness from the donor, which was a '91, and prepared to throw it in. Removed headliner, installed brackets and got the dome light harness out. Pulled the kick panel only to find, I don't have the connectors! I've got the outside air temp connector under the hood next to the fuse block, though!

The only connector I have is for the original dome light, the red one, but the pins don't match for the console connector and the other two are just NOT there. Even pulled the entire dash out to look, but nada....

The way I see it, I've got two options for keeping it, and I REALLY do want to! Option A) Could someone provide a diagram or something to use and splice the console harness into the dash harness?

Option B) Pull the dash harness out of the '91 it came out of, if it would even work. The donor has power windows and locks, while mine doesn't. It wouldn't mind doing that since my harness was spliced, cut and generally :explosion by the PO. Not a clean, unspliced wire anywhere....

What do you guys think would be the best way to tackle it? Like I said, I don't mind doing option B, since it would provide me with a good, clean harness. Checked it out while I was there and it was never tapped into anywhere I could see. Thanks, guys!

I'D SAY PLAN "B"... with the understanding that you may have to bastardize the donor harness with some parts/connections from your old harness to get things to work.
This is of course an assumption, and you may find that it;s completely plug-n-play.
I just like to hope fore best, but plan for the worst.

You could go plan "A" and have some luck, but may be more work than it's worth, and you'd still have a hacked up harness in the Jeep.

Either way, I think it comes down to how much work are you willing to put up with to have everything in that console work the way it's supposed to......

is this the full length overhead console that runs to the middle of the rear seat and has the small LED display that shows temp and direction? If so, my '90 has the same one and I have it in little pieces right now as I prepare for paint so I can take a shot at tracing the wires for you. I believe the wires on mine also run down the passengers "A" pillar and connect to the main harness down by the kick-plate but my outside temp sensor is located in front of the rad just behind the bumper....

Hey, sorry for not getting back. I got it figured out with my original harness. Turned out to be pretty much a 7-Wire hookup; Two for temp sensor, two for display (12V+ switched and ground) and three for the lights. Hooked those to the original dome light wires, just removed the red connector and put disconnects on it.

Works great! Temp and compass are pretty much spot on, only a couple degree variation on either one. The compass being off is probably because of my magnet mount CB antenna, but I'll be replacing it with a good solid mount soon enough.

If anyone wants to and for future reference, I can post pictures of the wires I used and how I did them. I didn't use the keyless entry module and wires since I don't have power locks, so that's just a lot less wires to deal with! :yap:

Glad you got it figured out.
I'd say go ahead and post the pics up.... if nothing else it may help someone later down the road who runs into the same sort of issues.
