We have a new parts house about to open here in town. About time we got something other then NAPPA, Advanced, and the mom and pop ones arround here. What is the general impression of there parts and there service? Better then Advanced?
I've only been in an Advanced a time or 2, so my opinion really isn't all that valid.
I've got an O'Reilly's 2 miles up the road from me, and they've made a pretty good friend out of me in less than a year. They *REALLY* busted their humps to get me a replacement axle nut for my CTD, and also stock lift pumps for it as well. Prices are about what I'd expect.
I don't think that good counter help is really particular to any one chain, though. Some good, some not so good.
When I was overhauling the 360 in my RamCharger, between AutoZone, the stealership, O'Reilley, and NAPA, O'Reilley got about 80% of my business. Primarily because I came to learn that they were more likely to have it in stock when I needed it.
O'Reilley is a great place in my opinion. They are based in Springfield, MO and they seem to have a store in every freakin' town in Missouri. I have found out that they usually have what your looking for in stock, and if not they can have it the next morning in most cases, and they will deliver to your door for free too! Now as far as some of their counter help..well lets say that they should be surving ice cream at McDonalds!!
I tend to disagree with the above posts. Adavance auto parts are new here and they are a blessing. Nothing but trouble from o'rielly has been my expierience. I go to Advance, Napa(when one is close) Orielly then autozone in that order. And if its worst case scenario Pep Boys, but I will usually try to make something before I go there .
The wife worked for both O'Reilly and Advance. I worked for advance when it was Parts America. The wife says O'Rielly's is just straight better. They are generally more expensive but they don't have cheapie parts either. They pretty much only sell the good stuff.
As with any parts store you'll get the uninformed genius working behind the counter once in a while.
But either way, The wife says O'Reilly is better to work for. And to buy from.
NAPA...even if I have to drive past all the others
CARQUEST...if there isn't a NAPA in any surrounding counties
You can walk into a NAPA and tell the guy you want a mower blade for your TORO, Impeller for your 6hp Evinrude boat motor, Pull cord for your garden tiller, and a set of points for your Ford 8N tractor. NAPA will even get you drums for your schoolbus if you want.
O Reily...not to bad...pretty good parts. not always the best help
Advance...not to bad...good selection of FelPro gaskets for chevy/ford small blocks
AutoZone...good for a candy bar and JP magazine
PepBoys...i'd consider buying my car wash supplies
Find a locally owned parts store. Find a counterman you like to talk to. and never go anywhere else.
Gene MJ....very biased manager of a NAPA<--by choice, I wouldn't work for any other.
Thanks guys that is what I was wondering. I generaly hit up NAPA if they are open and Advanced becase they are the only one in this town open after 5:30. Well not any more! Looks like Oreilley will get a try from me.
ive been in a couple o'reileys they seem alright, its just like any parts store tho, we all have access to tons of parts, some good some cheap. as stated above, its not at all the store that matters, its the people behind the counter. stores like autozone, kragen, and pep boys, will usually hire anyone with a clean record. i cant speak for other stores but at my napa we wont give someone with no real experience working on cars a second glance when hiring. every person working at my store either used to be a mechanic (the older guys), took some form of automotive training(the new kids), or is currently ASE certified (us mid level guys).
this is getting long winded lol, but its something i feel strongly about. its all about the people behind the counter and thier willingness to help you find what you need. if its in there, i'll find it. if not, i'll find out where you can get it. some people just dont care enough to look for something for more than 2 minutes. our store is one of the oldest napas, we've been open since 1948. that doesnt happen by not helping people.
like Gene said, find a local store where you can get along with the people behind the counter. that will net you the best results, no matter what company name is on the outside of the building.
