Opinion on Gears

XJ Stryker

WHO DAT!
Ok I finally got a Quote on gears from complete OffRoad.

I was looking for a kit for Dana 30/44 combo. 4.10 gearing

I am looking at 566.95 to the door.

That is with the instal kit and new carriers. These are Yukon gears.

So good deal or Bad deal.

I would go 4:88, you will have room to grow.
You will be good all the way up to 35 inches.

That is the guy from Dubuque, right, his prices are usually the best around.

I would PM National Drivetrain. They use Motive gears. Erik got me a much better quote then that to my door.

FWIW, I would recommend going at least 4.56s. I can pull and 8.8 and a D30 w/4.10s and have them under a jeep for less then that quote.

Okay, I agree with you here :)
4.88's is the way to go!

that is a lot of money to go from 3.55 to 4.10s plus the install labor you will be paying. LIke I said b4 saty with the 3.55's or at least go 4.56.

x3 on the 4.88s.

I guess it depends on what you want to do though. If you are going straight to 33s, do it. If you're going to hang around 31s for a long while, go 4.56. You will still be able to push 33s with no problem with 4.56s, but you will be screaming on 30s and 4.88s.

Edit: If you're dead set on 4.10s, find a front axle from a 4cyl XJ or TJ. That way you only have to pay to regear the rear axle.

Thanks for the replies.... This is a daily driver so I am trying to keep some gas mileage. I think the biggest I may go anytime soon is 31in tires. WIth what I have said would you still go 4.56!

I still want to be able to go 80 in my XJ lol

At this moment yall have me convinced to atleast get a quote on 4.56

this is the dilemma everyone goes through.

I went stock to 4.88's

choices...choices

According to this calculator you'll be at 2965 RPM @ 80MPH with 4.56s and an AW-4 which is a little high but not too bad.

You can use it and play around with it see what you like best. But if you decided to stick with 4.10s like i said, youd pretty much be better of swapping to an 8.8 and a D30 with 4.10s already installed.

Really though PM National Drivetrain. Theyre a NAXJA sponsor and have given me really great quotes.

I ran 30's and 4.10's and absolutley loved it. I then jumped up to 33's, still running the 4.10's......and it felt like a dog. So much so, that as soon as I got my pennies saved, I swapped in 4.88's and am back to liking it again. All the time my XJ was my DD, and still is. My XJ has an AW4 too.

30's and 4.88's would be a bit much for a DD in my opinion.

I 99.9% sure your quote for 4.56's will be the same price. It's all listed on their website, why do you need to get a quote?

you know the 8.8 isn''t a bad idea either, you can find those at pull a part for $100 -200 with disc brakes 4.10s and a limited slip. plus the axles are a tad larger. then you sell the 44 for about 250-300 and you just might come out ahead on the rear.

but i would still go 4.56's

Exactly what i was thinking... You would come out ahead in the rear. I can pull a front for about 150-200. So overall i think that would be the best choice for 4.10s.

Ive seen 8.8s hold up to 35s and Johnson Valley. Thats good enough for me...
