Official Unoficial Sierra Chapter Snow Wheeling, Jan 2

My buddy lives up there a few miles from the road. He wheels it on weekends. He said its a long trail, well, paved road thats covered in snow. It oes not go all the way through to hwy 88. its closed way up there. my only worry is that there wont be nough snow up there when we go to have much fun, but im headed up in the sierras south east of yosemite for xmas to visit family.so ill be having fun in the snow up there!!!

hey guys, dont really get on the forum too much. I would love to go on this trip but i dont have any recovery hooks... not even a hitch in the back. anyway i can get some cheap ones so i can go on this trip??? (im runnin a 3.5 lift with 31's)

so matt, what are we going to do if the snow level up there isnt good enough? are we still going to make the trip and find a different trail? i know you have to go back to school so we really cant postpone the trip if this happens.also anyone want to meet up somewhere right before or right after we merge to hwy 50 from I-5? im right in north sac literally right off arena blvd exit(arco arena exit).

i jut sol a hitch to a kid on here. he ended up not using it. ill tell him to log in and pm you if he wants to get rid of it.

Forest Service site shows it as closed. Am I understanding this correctly? Is it a problem?
Yes that is a problem

"Mormon Emigrant Trail from Highway 50 through to Highway 88 is closed. It is a Forest Road, not a CA State highway, so will not be listed on the Cal Trans road-condition phone number or website. Please Note: as the weather changes to winter and the road is closed, a snow berm may be placed on the Mormon Emigrant Trail at the Silver Fork junction. At that point, wheeled motor vehicle use such as cars, trucks, 4-wheel drives and all-terrain vehicles, is prohibited on the 5-mile section of MET from the Silver Fork Road junction to the Iron Mountain Sno-Park near Highway 88. During the winter season this section of the road is snow-covered and used by snowmobiles. "

Looking at a map, it seems that it is just the last 5 miles that are closed. Look at the google map on the first page, and follow the Mormon Emigrant trail all the way to Highway 88, and you will see Silver Fork Road. Im guessing its closed off there.

Anyone who has run this trail know if that is "far" or if that's just where the going gets fun?

If the snow level isnt good enough, I think I will call the run off. Its not worth it to drive up there and wheel in 1'' of snow. I might possibly postpone it since I go back to school around the 15th.

I will give the Forest Service a call tomorrow morning and see what they have to say about the trail being closed.

just an idea, if there isnt alot of snow up there, mabey a strawberry run would be fun. I havent made that run but I definatly would like to have a run this new year. Besides i spent the morning fabricating a makeshift front towpoint for this event. :moon:

turn off for the con (Ice House) is on the way to strawberry all the same to me we can play out on the slabes for the day been wanting to do that for awile. strawberry is fun also run it up and back .Well what say we time is coming .

I'm down to go the only thing I don't have is Tow Points in the front. It's about 45mins from my place. I like to take my Daytona 675 up their it's really pretty

The road is closed every winter because they do not plow it. There is no gate and OHV use is permitted. I have never made it more than about half way.

If there is snow, you won't get to that intersection. It is far. I would not call it fun, you can't roll backwards a 100 meters or so, like on Bald, but the scenery is really nice.

there are a few weather stations in the area, the trick is to find one at proper altitude, see for yourself, I look at >5000ft.

Looks like raining/snowing right now, so far it could be an ice skating trip, not snow wheeling, but a lot could change in a week.

Is the Rubicon to hard for the guys on 31s and open/open? If that is a viable alternative, then I would be happy to do that. I just want to go wheeling!

Icy stone and my unprotected belly could make a nasty couple.

I'd say if not Mormon, then Strawberry.
