**NWChapter Random Thoughts Thread***

just lean it up against the side of the house! :)

I'd really like to get a 8.8 in the rear. Could get lokka lockers front and rear for 400. But I want to go to 4.56 so I would need to get a new carrier for the front.

Got a reasonably priced junkyard around? Any ZJ with a V8 should have 3.73s... swipe the carrier out of the front diff. They are low pinion but the carrier is the same.

ECGS has 3.73-up carriers for $64, but you can probably get one for under $40 at a junkyard, especially if you rip the spiders out. Good opportunity to grab a spare set of big-ujoint axleshafts at the same time.

x2 to all that..

find a v8 ZJ (not all 4.0liters had 3.73s) and yank the carrier out of the front..

Thanks for the input guys, Ill have to make a trip to the local junkyard and see if they have any for decent prices. What would be a good deal for the carrier and shafts combined, Like under $100?

All the yards around me charge $30 each for axleshafts with unit bearings on them and $30-40 for a loaded carrier, so that sounds reasonable to me. But I don't know your local pricing, I'm 3k miles away.

Found a 8.8 with 3.73's from a 98 exploder close by. If I order the ruffstuff simple conversion kit and the ford 8.8 forged 1310 u-bolt yoke do i need anything else? My e-brake already doesnt work so not a huge issue right now. Then eventually Ill get the large front carrier from a junkyard and a 4.56 gear set from rwkhaussupply.

Might need to change the driveshaft, depends on pinion angle needed and whether you started with an 8.25 or a d35 I guess. Not really sure.

Just get the flange adapter, part number 2-2-1379, it's like 25 bucks brand new online. Means that if you ruin an adapter while wheeling you don't have to pull the yoke off the pinion and risk screwing up your pinion bearing preload or seal to replace it.

The 4 bolts that hold the adapter to the flange on an 8.8 (and most other large Ford axles, really) are M12x1.75 thread, and have a reduced 12 point 12mm head on them.

Starting with a d35. Ok ill look into the adapter, was just making sure I wasnt overlooking anything. Normal brake lines bolt up? Just making sure I'm not missing anything i need to get online, If i need to run to a parts store to get a brake line thats fine.

Since they have disc brakes (you want one with disc brakes) just run two of the passenger side (iirc, you'll know it when you see it at the junkyard, it's the one that's short and doesn't have a part that goes up to the frame) and connect em to your stock rubber hose with whatever 3/16 steel line is long enough. IIRC the threads on the ford factory lines are 3/8-24 threaded just like XJ stuff.

A OHC from a 94' zj should fit in my 97' xj right? I'm thinking a harness from a 91'-96' zj or xj one should work as 97' tends to use the same connectors.

Maybe?

I know they have XJ and ZJ marked on the computer module for the OHC, so I'm not sure if there is a firmware difference or something.

97+ XJ OHCs have a few weird year splits (mostly on wiring harness plugs and such) and get data via the CCD bus, I don't know how the ZJ ones work.

Ya as far as I've been looking and from looking around the junk yard, 98' was when most connectors got changed. Most if not all of the connectors and such on a 97' should be the Same as a 96'-. Trying to figure out if the one I have will work or not, it's got the wireless key thingy, the console thing for temp, mpg, and direction so I'm wanting to make it work but don't know if it can. If not ill just sell it lol

They sorta do.

They have their own unique connectors for a few things, like the transmission solenoid/sensor connector and a few others I can't think of. Probably the OHC, too.

They have an RF remote keyless entry like 98+, but it's mounted in essentially a blanked-off IR remote keyless entry "dome" that gets mounted in the 96- spot.

The TCU is unique to that year, so are some other things.

I wouldn't be at all surprised if the OHC module and harness connectors where they plug into the instrument panel harness are unique to 97 as well. My guess is that the split I'm talking about is either 99 down vs 00 up, or 97 vs 98 up. Not sure which and I could be completely wrong.

Ya you are right in that, most of the bigger items the connectors are different in the 97' i probably should have added that its the smaller connectors like the coil, oil, etc... Are the same as the 96' and below. I've many times needed a connector for my 97' and gone to the junk yard and cut the ones I need of the early models, but then again mine is a early 97' model(march of 97') so I could be wrong for the later ones.

Anybody have black and tan rear door panels for a 97+ that they want to trade for black and gray?
