ok so i bought a 231 with a jb conversions sye this weekend, i'm down at school right now and would like to swap it out in the parking lot, i have the ds i need but i went under today and i could only find 2 or 3 of the mounting studs with their nuts on them cause of the xmember in my way, is there a good picture of where these studs are? How difficult is it going to be to remove my tcase with basic tools (socket set 3/8's and 1/4 and a set of combo wrenches and other random stuff)? is it necessary for me to drop my xmember to see all of these studs? and i have been reading about cutting down the shifter linkage after an sye, what does this do and how is an sye'd 231 different then a normal one? and is there anyone in SLO willing to give me a hand with this swap this week sometime?
thanks for the help

Removing the crossmember is the only way to get to all the nuts holding in the t-case. Obviously you will need to support the trans once you remove the crossmember. A 9/16" box end wrench should work for all the nuts. Just lower the whole assy down a few inches to help access the top nuts easier.

As far as the shift linkage, that is only for certain years and only needed when installing the sye into the transfer case itself. from your post it appears as if you bought a complete case so you won't have to worry about it. Just be sure the t-case will shift into all gears easily before installing it.

ok thanks a lot, my motor mounts are shot so will there be a problem getting my xmember to bolt up in the same place again? should i try and change those first? do i need like a floor jack and a few pieces of wood to support the xmember while its unbolted?

you should be able to line up everything again - but shot motor mounts should be changed anyhow - so I'd do that first.

if you dont already have a drift punch, I'd recomend getting one (about a 1' long one) - I find that I use mine on almost every jeep project - and definately use it when re-aligning the crossmember.

the tool I'm thinking of, looks like this -

A floor jack, and a piece of wood is what I use to support the transmission while I have the t-case and crossmember off. If you have an automatic, be sure to not put a point load on the tranny pan - use another piece of wood to span a large area of the pan.

not *too* bad of a job, but not something that I'd do right before work.

Just did this 3 weeks ago just gotta say the bolts on the passenger side are alot of fun to get to. everthing else is easy

thanks for the help guys, now i just have to find a jack and a piece of wood like that,
and how big would the nut on the front output yoke be? i have to put my yoke on there and would like to know the size before going to rent out some tools

It should be 1-1/8" socket to get the front yoke nut off. Just a bot if advice though. If you don't have an impact gun you might have some trouble getting this ting off. Try this, remove the front driveshaft, put the transfer case into 4wd. Then have a buddy hold the brakes while you try to turn the nut with a large breaker bar. That should work, if not well then you got to get an impact gun.

has anyone had any problems with the mechanical speedo not fitting in the bore for the sye? mine sits in there fine, but can be moved around? is a bend of the retainer reqired to get it to seal correctly?
