Nothing to do with XJs

I am looking to get into the RV transport business and need a dually. I have been researching this for some months now. The problem I am in is that my divorce left my credit in shambles which is making it hard to get financing. Does anyone know of a lending company that would deal with me based on the fact that the truck will be making between $2000 and $3000 a week to secure the payments? Local dealers want me to put upwards of 40% down to get me finacned and that is impossible for me at this time. I have had my class A CDL for 5 years now and the only way to make any money these days on the road is to be an O/O but I am tired of the politics of dispatching. Owning a tractor, I would have to be on the road constantly to make the payments.

Another reason I would like to get this truck (make unimportant) is to haul my XJ and maybe a couple more to Moab in October.

Anyone want to invest in my future?:D

Hi MuddyXJ,

I'm the guy who was asking about the rack. I think my email isn't working right so I think I've missed your replies. I just wanted to let you know that I'm still interested and I've found an easy way to ship it whole.

Thanks.

My only suggestion on the dually would be to start cheap. I've seen nice older Ford diesels around here for 4 to 6 Grand. Are you looking at the new ones? Man are they expensive! A guy at work was telling me of some places in a used Farm Equipment book that had 2 or 3 year old ones for a little over 20K. The place is in Tenn. If you want I could get the names.

I have a line on a couple 98 Ford F350 duallys for under $20k and a F250 SD EXT cab for under $17k. Have been looking at a toter home too.

Just need a 98 or newer 3/4 ton long bed minimum.

Keep looking Mark, you can find 'em cheaper than that. Find out your local public auto action- usually held on tuesdays. There's screamin' deals out there if you are patient. On the other hand, you know how cheaply you can get a big rig and a trailer, why not go ahead and do it up?

I know there is auctions here but since I drive a truck I am never home during the week to get to them and they usually want 10% at sale then balance within 10 days I think. And the only way to get the money for that is to sell "MUDDY XJ" which is not really what I want to do right now. The plan I have has been talked over with a CPA and a lawyer and both say it can be done.

I have thought about buying a big truck and trailer but I am trying to get around government regs by using a lower GVW so I don't have to log time on deadhead miles so I can make more money. Since the driving hours are changing Jan. 1st, I wouldn't be able to make as much money in a big truck unless I run nonstop from coast to coast just to make payments on the truck.

It sounds like you are on the right track.

It is funny how sometimes the larger investment equipment which should really pay off is actually harder to make money with. A guy I know bought a new 4x4 diesel F350, gooseneck trailer, big LX190 skid steer loader, tractor with front-end loader and all the other attachments to get into the grading business. He made enough cash to get by but not what he had hoped.

He finally bought a $7000 grass cutter and has had more work than he can do for two years now. He says people will pay $60 an hour for the grass mower to run before they will pay $35 for the $20,000 Loader.

Good luck with your new business, I wish I had the guts to get out on my own.

Ok so I have been looking around and have come up with something puzzling. Why are the Dodge duallys cheaper then Fords? Seem every one is about 3-4K less the the comparable Ford dually. Hitting an auction tomorrow to see what's out there.

Because, sadly enough- the semi newer Dodges fall apart faster. I'm sure you know this but definately don't buy an auto behind a cummins. I've known several people that have found out that routine maintenance for their auto is to replace the whole darn thing.

I only want a standard tranny to have the power for the Rockies. Went to the auction yesterday and there wasn't one 3/4 ton or 1 ton truck there. Mostly ricers and wrecked vehicles. Some nice cars went for under $1000. Had a couple XJs there that went under $2000. I would have bid on the XJs but I have enough problems with mine now and getting ready to drive it to the junk yard.

Well it has been a long and hard road but I think I have come to the end where I get in a new to me 1998 F-350 Quad cab dually. My neighbor came thru for me and found this truck for me and actually will buy it for me if it meets my requirements. I am going to test drive it tomorrow and maybe bring it home. This will be one heck of a tow rig for Moab if I keep my Heep.
I couldn't believe the price for this thing either...........$8,500 with only 76K miles on the Powerstroke. Don't know if it was rebuilt or not but will know tomorrow. If I gt it there may be one spot left on the trailer to Moab if anyone needs a lift.
