I have a 2001 XJ Classic and I found NAXJA.
Friend of mine got his little sedan stuck on the side of the road and called my to get him out. MY XJ is stock. I tried finding a chain or cable around to hook up to my car to pull him out but to no avail. After a while we eventually had to call another friend (that is more of a jackass) with a Wrangler and he has a wench on the front.

After, I realised that is not right that I have a XJ and not being able to help a friend like that. Are there any crash course lectures any of you would like to give me on XJ's? Or any local shops that you know of that do good work?

Show up at the Chapter meeting and I'm sure there will be a half-ton of suggestions

Yup, what Jim said. You're more than welcome to join us at our Chapter meeting. It's gonna be held at Medved Jeep (I-70 and Ward Rd.) on Sat. March 19 from about 10am to sometime after 1pm. You'll be able to see all different sorts of XJ modifications and equipment - stock to hardcore. This is the best way to do your XJ research other than spending hours using the website "search" feature. I encourage you do definitely use the heck outta the "search" feature so that you can answer the frequently asked questions without posting them, and then post the questions you couldn't find answers to.

Hope to meet you at the meeting!

As for lift's how much cash do you have....

As for install again how much cash do you have….

I did my lift myself(I’m cheep), but it helped to have a heated garage to do it, and a buddy who lifted his TJ. As for the right lift for you there is plenty of info here using search to absolutely confuse you on what to do (I know that I was when I was looking for a lift).

I think that a lift is a really personal decision. You need to think about what you want to get out of the jeep. The biggest concerns are how big are the tires that you want to fit. Can you spend the money on the other things that you will have to do to the jeep as a result of the lift, i.e. SYE, axle upgrades, and whatnot.

As for me I did a Rubicon Express 4.5 superflex with a couple of upgrades, Rubicon monotube shocks and revolver shackles in the rear. Currently my tires are 32x11.5x15 Goodyear MTR's. I have a 91 and I haven't had to do a SYE kit yet, but I think that I'm lucky on that one. My jeep is fairly unstoppable on most terrain, but I have taken the strap a few times that I have gotten in over my head. I don’t get up everything, but I sure try to.

Okay. I am getting ahead of myself with the lift thing.

One thing that I am first looking to do before a lift is get a Tire Swing on my XJ. I do not mind having the tire in back, but ya know it would be nice to throw it on back.

A friend of mines 89 was totalled a few weeks ago and he is gonna be scraping it and he said whatever I could rip off it I can have. And I found out his Tire Swing won't mount right on mine but I might take off some other lovelies off his and atleast make some cool furniture out of it. Ya if any locals are looking for some spare parts off a 89 XJ let me know and I can see what I can do on his for ya.

But back to the point, does anyone have some words of wisom for Tire Swings? and local shops that do good work? and what not.

Laxa,

When looking into lifts, accessories and modifications, a good place to do some visual research is www.XJDB.com This is hosted by one of our members and it has TONS of pictures of stuff done to XJ's. It's got a great search feature that you can use to specifically look at topics like "4.5 inch lift" or "33 inch tires", or "Tire carriers".

It's been said to ya by another guy already, but I'll repeat it. Doing things to your XJ needs to be your decision - don't get wrapped up in asking "what do you guys like" or "what do you think I should do". Pose your questions with some of your ideas behind them like "I plan on doing some moderate off roading with my XJ, but need to keep it daily driveable. I don't want to cut my rig up too much and I don't have a lot of mechanical skills. Would a 3" lift be enough or should I be looking at a 6" lift?" This will give us other guys a better idea of what you're intentions for your rig are.

There are those of us here who are more practical - use minded with our XJ's because they're daily transportation, and there's those of us that trailer them to the trails and have no intention to ever have to drive them to work. Then there are both - daily driven hardcore rigs. Each one of these guys will have a different opinion of what is good, bad and ugly as far as modifications.

Get to a meeting and look at some rigs, find some that look like what you have in mind and meet the owners - there ain't a one of us that doesn't like talking about our XJ's! You'll get alot of good information this way.

Also, when you decided on some modification, lift or other accessory you want, but don't think you can install yourself, bring it up in the chapter forum and you'll probably find someone willing to help you out. Lift parties are a growing trend, so before you throw down ridiculous amounts of $$$ paying a shop to do your work, see if someone here is willing to help you. Some of us are quicker to wrench on someone else's rig than our own - for some sick reason! :laugh3:

Laxa - Another thing to mention is whether you can work on the Jeep where you live, or if you need to put it in someone else's garage for awhile while it's lifted there. What year, and what kind of budget?
Daily driver, or do you have another vehicle you can use as a backup and parts-runner?
How's the underside look? What's the history of this Jeep - if it came from the Rust Belt it's going to be a major pain in the butt to remove the springs and some of the bolts, including the upper shock mounts that often break.
My first lift on this Jeep was a 2" RE Budget Boost, and that easily fits 30" tires and flexes well for hitting many of the local trails. I'd recommend getting the full-length AAL with that however.

Thank you all so far this is being very educational.

And just to put it down:
2001 Cherokee Classic
Daily Transportation

i hear ya there. Im also in high school. Savin money is a bit hard especially with college next year. My suggestion is to save until you know exactly what you want and not buy something that you have the money for at the time. Save and make it worth while! :)

If you just want a small lift and bigger/more agressive looking tires... i'd go with the teraflex 1.5" budget booster from www.dc4wd.com and get some 30" muds. With this setup you can use your stock shocks still. 4wheelparts.com has their buy 3 get 1 free procomp tire sale this month... This setup would put you a little higher than stock and also be under/around $525. This is what i am getting for this summer, until i can save up to go big. Then i plan on selling this lift and tires to the next "student" lookin for a little more agressiveness in their rig. IMHO...

Since no one else has said it, I will. Don't use a chain or cable to pull out a stuck vehicle. Get a good strap, and not one with hooks. If something would break or come unhooked while pulling out a stuck, the metal flying at you and your vehicle is a very bad thing.

Other than that, listen to the other replies you've gotten. And welcome to NAXJA.
