Ok, I upgraded my OS from ME to 2000 pro a few weeks ago and my speakers don't work and neither does the headphone jack. So I'm assuming the drivers for the sound card didn't get carried over. Does this sound right?? Is there anyway to recover them?? If not, where can I get them?? It's a Presario 1700. Thanks

Try going into settings and then click on install new hardware, let it do an auto search. If nothing turns up, select is manually and let it search for a driver. If still nothing find out what is your sound card make and go to the company site, the drivers are probably there free for download. You can also try going to Windows Update site and let MS do a search of all your drivers etc. to get the latest product and driver updates. You might even have the drivers already with your factory discs.

Win2k has either not detected your sound card or doesn't have the correct driver for it. Go to control panel and select "System" Then the "Hardware" tab and then "Device Manager". Look for a device labeled "Sound video and game controllers". If it's not there, the system did not detect your card. If the sound card is integrated on the motherboard, make sure that it is enabled in your system BIOS. Get the instructions on how to do this from the manufacturer of the computer or motherboard. If a sound card was detected. The sound card will be listed with a yellow question mark next to it. This indicates that you don't have the correct driver. I hope you know exactly what kind of sound card that you have. As has been mentioned before, you'll need to go to the manufacturer's web site and obtain the correct windows 2000 driver for the specific card you have. Most web sites also have instructions on how to install the driver. You are better off using them as they are very explicit and loaded with screen shots.

here is a screenshot of my device manager. The yellow question marks make sense since my ethernet card doesn't work either(using wireless PCI card adapter). So is the multimedia controller my sound card?? Thanks

What kind of computer do you have? Do you have an integrated sound card to the motherboard or a seperate soundcard or both? Looks like you need the proper drivers for both sound card and NIC.

Maybe I'm blind, but I've been through that list of drivers many times, now and in the past, and I can not for the life of me find one related to sound. Anyone feel like pointing it out to me. I only claim to be slightly knowledgeable about computers.

The computer is a Compaq Presario 1700(don't know which little letters at the end). Thanks

Also the ESS 1988 Allegro WDM driver is the driver for the sound card.
