No mere coincidence

In the coming New Year, 2012, both Groundhog Day and the State of the Union address will occur on the same day.

This is an ironic and quizzical juxtaposition of events.

One involves a meaningless ritual in which we gather, as a large group, and look to a pampered, otherwise insignificant creature of low motivation and, apparently, very little intelligence for prognostication about our future.

The other involves a groundhog.
