Well the one arm bandit strikes. Took me almost an hour since I only have one good arm, but got it fixed and without question 4x4 works 
Have 5 people coming to look at the XJ today so hopefully its gone by this afternoon.
Thank you to all of you who offered up knowledge and a HUGE thanks to Adam for actually crawling around under it to help me diagnose it.
