Nissan 350Z or BMW 330i?

Looking at getting one of those cars, around a 2003-2005 model, when I get back from deployment. Has anyone on here ever had one of those? What are some things you liked/didnt like if you have? I really like the 330 but the Z would probably have parts for a lot cheaper from the aftermarket. Not to concerned with winter driving, will mainly be my summer toy since I have the XJ.

I would say the Z. Mostly cause I work at a nissan dealership as a mechanic, and those motors can actually make some decent power..more than the 370s as a point and fact. BMW are WAY too expensive, if it were up to me, I'd say XXXX it and spend the money on an old semi-built buick, or mustang 5.0. Rear-wheel american is alot of fun, easy to work on, and super cheap. Nobody can really disagree on that bland of a statement

Where are you deployed? My buddy took European delivery of a BMW. You pick it up and the factory, drive it around Europe for a while, then give it back and they ship it to your dealer stateside. I forget if it really even cost him anything, other then the flight to Germany and back.

I'd go BMW. It may not have the focus on outright performance, but the 350Z could never compare on how it feels to drive. The ride and handling are awesome on that generation of 330, and the interior is far above the 350. Not to mention the presence of a backseat means you can fit 4 in a pinch.

Pretty sure BMW doesn't do Euro delivery on a used car...;)

I am on the USS George HW Bush. I could buy a new car and pic it up from the nearest dealer, but I cant afford that right now. Just looking to spend most of what I have saved up while on deployment. Really am leaning towards the 330i, just when I am in a more sporty mood I think about the Z.

The 330i (or are you looking 330ci, as in coupe?) will get you plenty of sport for most situations. BMW uses a 320i as the basis for their Touring Car championship series racer.

I haven't had any experience with a 330 but I had a 540 and my buddie had a z3 and after 100k they fall apart. He had to get a new engine at 45k due to an overheat on hwy 1. I will never own another BMW.

Also, BMW's seem completly over assisted. Way overassisted steering, brakes, and touchy crap drive my wire throttles. I have no idea why Car and Drive loves them so much.

The 330ci I test drove had nicely weighted steering, brakes were good, the clutch was a bit light though which caused me to stall a couple times...couldn't feel the friction point. :D

I hardly ever post on here but occasionally lurk, and spend most of my time lurking on pirate. However, this topic caught my eye. I'm 19 and in college so take my advice with a grain of salt. It is real world experience though, not some test drive or my cousin's in law has one and loves it crap.

My mom has a 2004 BMW 330xi and my dad has a 2005 Nissan 350z, and I've put many miles on both of them. Both were bought used with less then 50k for less then 20 grand and both are 6 speeds. In everyway imaginable other then not having a backseat, the Nissan has been a far better car.

Performance wise, the Nissan spanks on the BMW. The BMW has a ton of torque and even being AWD wants to scrub the tires from a dead stop, however it doesn't have the top end. When the BMW quits pulling, the Nissan keeps going. Handling?? Your kidding right? I've beat on both substantially and the BMW handles like a dream for a 4 door sedan and gives much confidence to even the most novice driver with its super grippy AWD, but the Nissan will still beat it in the corners and pull in the straights. However the Nissan is less forgiving when pushed to its limits and will get tail happy quick if you're stupid.

Interior, sit in both. Notice the woodgrain in the BMW? its the only difference. Both have very nice interiors with leather and a great stereo. I prefer the instrument panel in the Nissan.

Reliability is the big winning factor for the Nissan. I dont know if every BMW is as unreliable as her's but we have literally poured THOUSANDS of dollars into that car. CV joints and axles, ball-joints, wiper motor, and numerous other things. I know you're thinking oh well sounds like normal wearable parts but WRONG, all those parts were within a year. Not to mention the sheer cost of BMW parts. Pads and rotors at the dealer, $650. The Nissan meanwhile developed a ticking in the rear end, took it to A nissan dealer, NOT the one we bought it from and they re-torque the axles for free. Ticking gone and not another ill sound has came from that car. It has been a wonderfully reliable vehicle.

I know it looks like I'm doing a lot of d**k riding on Nissan, but it's just a superior car in every way. The BMW is gorgeous (it's black) and when not broken runs good and handles great, but the Nissan does all that and does it better, bottom line. If you have no need for a back seat, forget about the BMW emblem and get the Nissan. You won't regret it.
