I just got a '96 sport, the tranny has a terrible slip going into 3rd gear. I read in my hanes manual that the auto trannys had adjustment bands on them, has anyone done this and know if it will solve my shifting problem? If not i have a tranny and t-case from a '91 limited HO, will this tranny fit a '96 six? the only differences i know of , is the '91 tranny has the "power trans" switch on the dash.
Any help would be appreciated, thanks

Haynes is wrong (as usual). Your tranny doesn't have adjustable bands. Check the trans cable from the throttle body for proper adjustment. The cable controls hydraulic pressure in the tranny and if that's out of whack it can cause slow shifts or slipping. Also check that it's properly filled with Dextron IIe/III.

As for swapping the tranny, the AW4 changed a bit in mid-1996 with the switch to OBD-II control systems. An extra speed sensor was added for the input shaft that would definitely be missing from the 91. If you have the newer version, you would also have to swap over the trans computer and wiring and the check engine light staying on. Otherwise, I believe it will bolt right on. I have an 1999 AW4 bolted up to an 89 block.

the problem with third id the clutches inside ur tranny are failing, if u want u can try adding a tranny additive to see if that helps, Lucas tranny treat is really good and ony about $13 , and most parts suppliers carry it.

Thanks 4 the help guys. I checked the cable and it seems to b fine, i added a jug of lucas transmission additive and still no difference. I guess its time to start shopping around for another tranny
